NEW YORK (VINnews) — JetBlue Airways is increasing fees for checked baggage, pointing to higher fuel expenses as a key factor behind the move.
The airline said most economy passengers will now pay $39 to check a first bag during off-peak travel periods, up from $35. During busier travel times, such as summer and major holidays, the fee will rise to $49, an increase from $40.
Customers who wait until less than a day before departure to pay for baggage — including those paying at the airport — will face an additional charge.
The changes come as airlines grapple with rising jet fuel prices, which have pushed up overall travel costs in recent weeks. Fuel remains one of the industry’s largest expenses, and carriers often adjust fees to offset those increases.
JetBlue said it periodically reviews pricing to balance operating costs with maintaining competitive fares. The airline added that fees tied to optional services help support its overall customer experience, including onboard amenities.
Some travelers, such as frequent flyers with elite status or those holding certain co-branded credit cards, may still qualify for waived baggage fees.
Other major U.S. airlines, including American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines, have not yet indicated whether they will follow with similar increases, though such moves are common across the industry.
