Another Espionage Case: Israeli Agreed To Travel To Enemy Country For Training

Apr 20, 2026·2 min read

The Shin Bet and Central District Police published a joint statement on Monday morning revealing the arrest of two Israeli citizens in the past month on suspicion of maintaining a contract with Iranian intelligence agents and carrying out missions intended to harm state security.

The main suspect is Sagi Haik, a 19‑year‑old from the central Israeli city of Ness Tziona. Haik maintained contact with an Iranian foreign agent for several months, during which he revealed personal information about himself and those of his family members.

Several family members began receiving direct threatening messages from the Iranian agent, but despite this, Haik continued the relationship and even expressed willingness to travel to an Arab country for specialized training

As part of his activity for the Iranians, Haik was asked to recruit additional people to carry out missions. In his interrogation, he admitted that he enlisted another young man to carry out a mission for the agent: Asaf Shitrit, 21, a resident of Beit Oved, a moshav in central Israel.

Following Haik’s confession, Shitrit was also arrested for Shin Bet questioning. A severe indictment is expected to be filed today against both of them in the Central District Court in Lod.

Security officials emphasized that this case does not stand alone, but is part of a series of recent Iranian attempts to exploit young Israelis through social media.
