Hungary’s Incoming Leader Says Netanyahu Would Face Arrest if ICC Warrant Applies

BUDAPEST (VINnews) — Hungary’s incoming prime minister, Peter Magyar, said Monday his government would honor obligations tied to the International Criminal Court, signaling that any individual subject to an active warrant — including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — could be detained if Hungary remains part of the court, according to Agence France-Presse.

Magyar made the remarks while discussing Hungary’s future relationship with the ICC, indicating he intends to halt the country’s planned withdrawal from the court.

His comments come despite having invited Netanyahu to visit Budapest later this year. Magyar said the invitation was part of broader outreach tied to a national commemoration, but emphasized that legal obligations would still apply.

Hungary’s current leadership under Viktor Orban had moved to exit the ICC following a meeting with Netanyahu, with the withdrawal expected to take effect in the coming months. Magyar said that process could still be reversed before it is finalized.

The ICC previously issued a warrant related to allegations stemming from Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza, which Israel disputes.

The issue highlights ongoing friction between international legal bodies and national governments. The United States has taken punitive steps against ICC officials over the matter, while the United Nations has raised concerns about those actions.
