WASHINGTON D.C (VINnews) – President Trump addressed the nation from the White House late Saturday after he and other attendees were abruptly evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington following reports of gunshots near the venue.af6346

Trump, attending the annual event for the first time as president, was rushed offstage by Secret Service agents amid the chaos at the Washington Hilton. No injuries were reported among the president, first lady Melania Trump or other high-profile attendees, and authorities said a suspect was taken into custody.

In remarks delivered from the White House, Trump praised law enforcement’s swift response and described the incident as “rather traumatic,” particularly for the first lady. He said he had pushed to continue the evening but deferred to security officials, who opted to evacuate and reschedule the dinner.

“This was an event dedicated to the freedom of speech,” Trump said, noting the unified reaction in the room across party lines. He had planned a more confrontational speech but called the night a moment of national unity before the disruption.

The White House Correspondents’ Association confirmed the dinner would be rescheduled. The annual black-tie gala celebrates the First Amendment and journalism while raising funds for scholarships.

Authorities are investigating the shooting, which occurred outside the main screening area. One law enforcement officer was reportedly injured and is receiving treatment. Trump described the suspect as a “lone wolf” from California.

The president vowed the event would take place again soon. “We’re not going to let anybody take over our society,” he said.

VINnews will continue to monitor developments.
