Bipartisan Scrutiny Grows Over Security at White House Correspondents’ Dinner After Shooting

Apr 26, 2026·2 min read

WASHINGTON (VINnews) — Bipartisan scrutiny intensified Sunday over security protocols at the venue hosting the White House Correspondents’ Dinner after a shooting near the event raised questions about how an armed suspect was able to enter the hotel where President Donald Trump, cabinet officials and members of Congress were gathered.

Lawmakers from both parties called for a review of security procedures at the Washington Hilton, citing concerns over access controls and screening measures outside the ballroom where the annual dinner was taking place. Authorities said the suspect was stopped before reaching the main event space and that protective protocols ultimately functioned as intended.

The incident has also reignited debate over Trump’s long-standing proposal to build a high-security ballroom on White House grounds, a project supporters say would provide a more controlled venue for major events involving senior government officials. Trump and several allies argued the shooting underscored the need for the project, while critics focused instead on lapses at the hotel venue.

Some lawmakers, including Democrats and Republicans who attended the dinner, said the venue may be ill-suited for hosting an event involving so many officials in the presidential line of succession. Others stressed the Secret Service response prevented a potentially more serious outcome.

The White House ballroom project, which has faced legal and preservation challenges, has become newly central to the political fallout from the shooting, even as investigators continue examining how the suspect moved through the hotel armed.
