After Court Criticizes Lack Of Enforcement, Police Arrest Yeshiva Student Evading Draft

Apr 27, 2026·2 min read

JERUSALEM (VINnews) In the early hours of Monday, Israel’s Military Police Corps arrested a yeshiva student at his home in the Gilo neighborhood of Jerusalem. He was taken to a military prison after failing to report to the draft office following an arrest warrant issued against him.

The arrest comes just one day after a ruling by the Supreme Court of Israel, which imposed stricter sanctions on Torah students and called on the police to cooperate more fully in enforcement.

According to reports from organizations assisting charedi draft evaders, the student was detained early in the morning and is expected to be brought before a military judge. His identity has not yet been made public.

The arrest follows weeks during which the Military Police largely refrained from detaining yeshiva students. Now, it appears that a new wave of arrests has begun.

The development comes in the wake of the court’s decision, in which the justices sharply criticized police conduct and ruled that law enforcement must fully cooperate with military authorities in arresting yeshiva students who fail to report for conscription.

Deputy President of the court, Noam Solberg, wrote in the decision:
“It appears that the police are not fulfilling their duty to exercise their authority and enforce the law against draft evaders from the Haredi public. This cannot be accepted; the police must assist the military enforcement authorities and begin enforcing the obligation of conscription on members of the Haredi community.”

He added:
“It should be noted that the social message arising from the police refraining from acting specifically against those who attempt to thwart enforcement through widespread disturbances, amounting to ‘a sinner benefiting from his wrongdoing’, is a message that cannot be tolerated.” The ruling also quoted the Book of Iyov:
“It is unacceptable that ‘a man of might inherits the land’ and ‘the strongest prevails.’”

The court described the situation as a “mass, conscious, and ongoing violation of the law” by Torah students.
