Man Convicted in Killing of NYPD Detective Sentenced to 115 Years to Life

NEW YORK (VINnews) – A man convicted in the fatal shooting of slain NYPD Detective Jonathan Diller and the attempted killing of another officer was sentenced Monday to 115 years to life in prison, prosecutors said.

The defendant Guy Rivera was sentenced in Queens after a jury earlier found him guilty of aggravated manslaughter, attempted murder and weapons charges in the March 2024 shooting in Far Rockaway. He was acquitted of first-degree murder.

Prosecutors said the shooting unfolded during a police encounter when officers approached a parked vehicle and ordered the suspect to comply. Authorities said he instead pulled a handgun and shot Diller, mortally wounding him. Prosecutors said he then aimed at an NYPD sergeant and pulled the trigger, but the weapon jammed.

Diller, who was later posthumously promoted to detective, was remembered by officials as a devoted officer, husband and father.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said the sentence ensures the defendant “will never be free again.”

The sentence combines consecutive terms on multiple counts, amounting to what prosecutors described as an effective life sentence. A second man charged in connection with the case is still facing prosecution.
