King Charles Addresses Congress During State Visit: Read His Speech In Full
[Video below.] King Charles III highlighted the enduring partnership between the United States and the United Kingdom during a landmark address to a joint session of Congress, marking the first time in 35 years that a British monarch has spoken before the body.
The speech, delivered on April 28, was part of Charles’s first official visit to the United States since ascending the throne in 2022.
Charles and Queen Camilla arrived in Washington, D.C., on April 27 to begin their visit. Following his remarks to Congress, the couple is expected to attend a state dinner at the White House and participate in a wreath-laying ceremony honoring fallen service members, symbolizing the close military ties between the two nations.
In his address, Charles reflected on what he described as the deeply connected histories of the United States and the United Kingdom, characterizing their shared story as one of “reconciliation, renewal and remarkable partnership.”
He also referenced the recent shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 25, an incident in which a suspect has been charged with attempting to assassinate the president.
“We meet, too, in the aftermath of the incident not far from this great building that sought to harm the leadership of your Nation and to foment wider fear and discord,” Charles said. “Let me say with unshakeable resolve: Such acts of violence will never succeed.”
The monarch spoke about his longstanding ties to the United States, noting that this visit marks his 20th trip to the country. He highlighted the shared democratic values of both nations and pointed to Britain’s increased defense spending as part of its commitment to the alliance.
Charles also addressed the upcoming 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, which will be commemorated later this year. He and Queen Camilla are scheduled to travel to New York City during their visit to mark the occasion.
“This atrocity was a defining moment for America and your pain and shock were felt around the whole world,” he said in his speech. “During my visit to New York, my wife and I will again pay our respects to the victims, the families, and the bravery shown in the face of terrible loss. We stood with you then. And we stand with you now in solemn remembrance of a day that shall never be forgotten.”
In addition to reflecting on history, Charles addressed current global challenges, including climate change, the importance of NATO, and the growing cooperation between the United States and the United Kingdom in technology and innovation.
“From the bitter divisions of 250 years ago, we forged a friendship that has grown into one of the most consequential Alliances in human history,” he said.
