TORONTO (VINnews) — A 67-year-old man has been charged with murder in a daytime shooting at a North York park that left a 47-year-old Jewish man dead, police said.

Officers responded around 12:25 p.m. Thursday to reports of gunfire near Marlee and Glengrove avenues West, where they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police identified the victim as Daniel Stopnicki, 47, of Toronto.

Authorities said Michaelo Markicevic, 67, also of Toronto, was arrested nearby and charged with second-degree murder. He was scheduled to appear in court the following day.

Investigators have not said whether the suspect and victim knew each other. The killing marks Toronto’s seventh homicide of 2026.

The shooting occurred close to where Myron Demkiw and Olivia Chow were participating in a community prayer walk with local leaders.

Police are asking anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues.
