This May, in recognition of Bicycle Awareness Month, Rockland County reminds residents that bicycle safety is a shared responsibility and an essential part of keeping our roads safe for everyone.

According to the Traffic Safety Statistical Repository, Rockland County recorded 90 bicycle/vehicle crashes in 2024, resulting in one fatality and 83 injuries. These incidents highlight the need to increase awareness, safe riding practices, and mutual respect between motorists and cyclists on our roadways.

Under New York State law, bicyclists are required to follow the same traffic laws as drivers and have the same rights on the road. Safe cycling means obeying traffic signals, using proper hand signals, and equipping bicycles with safety items  including lights and reflectors. Helmet use remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of serious injury, particularly for children under 14.It’s the law in Rockland County for all bicyclists to wear a helmet.

Rockland County encourages bicyclists to take the following precautions:

● Always wear a properly fitted helmet.

● Ride with traffic and obey all traffic signs and signals.

● Use front white lights, rear red lights or reflectors, and reflective gear when riding at night.

● Stay alert and avoid distractions such as phones or headphones.

● Use hand signals when turning or stopping.

● Ride predictably and remain visible to drivers.

● Never ride impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Motorists play a critical role in bicycle safety and must remain alert, share the road, check blind spots, and provide safe passing distance when near cyclists.
