Debris Falls from Overpass on Cross Bronx Expressway, Injuring 1; Westbound Lanes to GWB Lower Level Remain Closed
NEW YORK (VINnews) – A chunk of debris fell from an overpass on the Cross Bronx Expressway early Monday, striking a car and injuring one person, authorities said.
The FDNY responded to a report of a person struck by falling debris near Exit 1 around 7:50 a.m. The victim was transported to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey closed all westbound lanes leading to the lower level of the George Washington Bridge for investigation and repairs. As of Wednesday afternoon, those lanes remained closed, with significant delays on the upper level.
Traffic Updates (as of mid-afternoon Wednesday):
All westbound lanes on the Trans-Manhattan Expressway approach to the GWB lower level are closed. Motorists should use the upper level.
The 181st Street exit is closed; drivers are being redirected to the Jerome Avenue and Major Deegan Expressway exits.
Upper level westbound to New Jersey faced delays of up to 45-75 minutes due to diverted traffic and emergency maintenance.
Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time, use alternate routes or check 511NY.org or the PANYNJ app for real-time updates.
This is the second such incident in recent days. Last week, a large piece of debris fell onto the roadway near the GWB in a separate location, damaging a vehicle but causing no injuries.
The Port Authority is investigating the cause of Monday’s debris fall and has stated it will complete necessary repairs promptly. No structural damage has been reported in preliminary assessments of similar prior events.
Officials have not released the victim’s identity.
