UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain Round Up 100+ Shiite Residents Accused of Loyalty to Iran

May 14, 2026·1 min read

Gulf Arab nations have arrested more than 100 Shiite residents on treason charges in the wake of Iran’s attacks during the recent war, the New York Times reported.

The arrests, which have taken place across the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Bahrain, target individuals accused of loyalty to Tehran. The crackdown reflects deep anxieties among Gulf states that came under sustained Iranian assault during the conflict and are now moving aggressively against suspected fifth-column activity within their borders.

Kuwait has disclosed the most specific details, announcing the dismantling of three cells linked to the Iran-backed Hezbollah terror organization, including one allegedly plotting to assassinate Kuwaiti leaders. Dozens more Shiite suspects have been detained in Bahrain and the UAE.

The legal proceedings have largely been shielded from public scrutiny. Trials are mostly closed to the press, and counterterrorism statutes are being applied broadly, in some cases covering conduct that would otherwise be classified as political dissent.
