CRISIS TALKS: Netanyahu Reexamining Draft Law Push Amid Deepening Rift With Chareidim

May 14, 2026·2 min read

Prime Minister Netanyahu and his inner circle are reportedly reassessing the coalition’s political landscape surrounding the controversial draft law, as tensions with the chareidi parties continue to escalate.

According to reports from within the Prime Minister’s Office, officials have begun conducting an internal review to determine which coalition members support renewing efforts to advance the draft law, which lawmakers oppose it, and which MKs remain undecided.

The move comes ahead of what is being described as a critical political assessment regarding the future of the coalition and the growing crisis with the chareidi factions.

Sources close to Netanyahu stressed that no final decision has yet been made regarding whether to resume advancing the draft law during the current Knesset session. However, they said all options are now being explored in an effort to prevent a complete breakdown in relations with the chareidim.

According to political insiders, Netanyahu and his aides attempted earlier this week to arrange a meeting with Moshe Gafni, chairman of Degel HaTorah, to discuss the escalating dispute. Gafni reportedly avoided the meeting and declined to participate.

Later in the evening, Deputy Minister Uri Maklev was summoned for talks with Netanyahu, during which the prime minister reportedly conveyed that, in his assessment, now is not the appropriate time to push the draft law and that the issue should instead be resolved after elections.

In Degel HaTorah, Netanyahu’s remarks were reportedly viewed as confirmation that the government does not intend to complete the legislation anytime soon. Shortly afterward, the party announced it was ending its membership in the right-wing bloc and would support efforts to advance the dissolution of the Knesset as quickly as possible.

Political officials now say Netanyahu is attempting damage control with the chareidi leadership in hopes of halting the deterioration and bringing Degel HaTorah and the other chareidi factions back into the right-wing camp.

Senior chareidi officials warned that the burden is now on Netanyahu to prove his intentions.

“This time, the proof is on Netanyahu,” senior chareidi figures said. “If he wants the chareidim with him, he will have to show actions.”
