PHILADELPHIA (VINnews)- A suspected intruder was fatally shot by a neighbor early Monday after police said he forced his way into a home occupied by an Jewish family in northeast Philadelphia.

The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. on Griffith Street in the Rhawnhurst section of the city, according to police.

Authorities said the man, believed to be in his 40s, broke through the front door of the residence and entered a teenage girl’s bedroom while the family was inside. Police said the suspect’s vehicle was found parked outside the home.

Homeowner Evelyn Leiva told Philadelphia’s ABC6 that she awoke to a loud noise before finding an unfamiliar man inside her daughter Valentina’s bedroom holding what appeared to be a metal object.

Leiva said she struggled with the intruder and screamed for help as her daughter woke up during the chaos. “This guy no help me, this guy kill me,” Leiva told ABC6 while describing the neighbor who intervened.

Police said a downstairs neighbor heard the screams, rushed upstairs and confronted the suspect. Authorities said the intruder was holding a stick or metal object when the neighbor ordered him to drop it. When the man allegedly refused, the neighbor fired one shot, striking him in the chest.

The suspect was pronounced dead at a hospital.

No one inside the home was injured.

Philadelphia police said homicide detectives are investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure in fatal incidents, and no charges will be filed according to the DA.
