Charedi Parties Could Support Opposition’s Proposal To Dissolve The Knesset

May 19, 2026·2 min read

JERUSAALEM (VINnews) — Internal consultations are taking place within Shas and United Torah Judaism prior to tomorrow’s dramatic vote on the bills to dissolve the Knesset, regarding how to vote. The parties are debating whether to support one of the opposition’s proposals to dissolve the Knesset, or reject them all and vote only for the coalition’s own dissolution bill.

B’Chadrei Charedim reports that the charedi parties fear a scenario in which voting against the opposition’s proposals would cause them to fail, after which the coalition could choose to withdraw its own dissolution proposal at the last moment. The coalition’s bill is scheduled to be voted on last among the dissolution proposals.

At the same time, sources close to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are making clear that they have come to terms with the possibility that the Knesset dissolution bill could pass its preliminary reading as early as tomorrow. However, they stress that Netanyahu intends to continue advancing the military draft law in the coming weeks in an attempt to preserve bloc stability ahead of the election campaign.

The struggle over the election date continues: Aryeh Deri, chairman of Shas, has reiterated that his preferred date for elections is September 15, while United Torah Judaism prefers September 1. Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s associates believe the election date could potentially be postponed until October.
