SHOCK IN QUEENS: Former Hatzalah Volunteer Found Shot Dead Near Kissena Lake; Massive NYPD Investigation Underway

May 19, 2026·2 min read

A shocking murder investigation is unfolding in Queens after a 75-year-old Jewish man was found shot dead near Kissena Lake on Monday afternoon.

The NYPD confirmed to YWN that officers responded at approximately 4:55 p.m. and discovered Avrohom (Albert) Itzkowitz Z”L suffering from multiple gunshot wounds near the shoreline. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sources tell YWN that Itzkowitz was shot four times. Shockingly, no firearm and no shell casings were found at the scene, intensifying the mystery surrounding the killing.

A police presence remains in the area, including K-9 units and members of the NYPD Emergency Service Unit, who are combing the scene for evidence.

Chesed Shel Emes volunteers are also on scene ensuring proper kavod hames.

The Niftar was well known in the Queens Jewish community. He was a former volunteer with Hatzalah years ago, serving as unit Q-26.

He was also the longtime owner of the well-known G&I Bakery on Main Street, a neighborhood institution for many years before it closed down.

Neighbors say he lived across from the shul of Rabbi Oelbaum near 73rd Avenue and Main Street in Kew Gardens Hills.

Tragically, sources say his wife was niftar just three weeks ago.

Levaya details will be published when they become available to YWN.
