Knesset Votes Unanimously To Dissolve Early, Election Date To Be Set After Final Reading

May 20, 2026·2 min read

JERUSALEM (VINnews) — The Knesset plenum held a discussion and preliminary vote on Wednesday afternoon concerning the coalition’s bill to dissolve the 25th Knesset.

A total of 110 members of Knesset voted in favor of the proposal, with no opponents or abstentions. The political move was advanced mainly by the charedi parties amid the ongoing dispute over the failure to pass a military draft law.

As part of the political understandings reached, a separate bill to dissolve the Knesset submitted by the Blue and White faction is also expected to pass its preliminary reading in the plenum.

According to parliamentary procedure, the bills approved in the vote will not immediately dissolve the Knesset. Instead, they will first be transferred to the House Committee for further discussion and drafting. After committee deliberations are completed, the bills will return to the Knesset plenum for a first reading vote.

From there, the legislation will once again be sent back to committee for final preparations, and only afterward will it be brought for final approval in second and third readings. At the final stage — the third reading — the official date for Israel’s next elections will also be determined.

It was noted that the coalition controls the legislative timetable and the pace at which the law advances through committee.

The explanatory notes attached to the proposal state: “It is proposed to determine, in accordance with Sections 34 and 35 of Basic Law: The Knesset, that the 25th Knesset shall dissolve before the end of its term, and that elections for the 26th Knesset shall take place on a date to be established by law, as proposed by the House Committee in the framework of the legislative process.”
