Trump, Netanyahu Clash in Tense Call Over Iran Peace Proposal

May 20, 2026·1 min read

WASHINGTON D.C (VINnews) – President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a difficult phone call Tuesday over a Qatar- and Pakistan-mediated proposal aimed at ending the conflict with Iran, sources familiar with the discussion told Axios.

The revised plan includes a “letter of intent” to formally halt hostilities followed by 30 days of negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Mediators from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt have also been involved in the effort.

Trump has signaled openness to pursuing a diplomatic deal while maintaining military options on the table. Netanyahu, however, remains deeply skeptical and prefers resuming strikes to further degrade Iran’s military capabilities and eliminate its stockpiles of enriched uranium, according to Israeli officials.

Israeli officials described Netanyahu as highly frustrated following the conversation. Trump has reportedly paused major strike plans at the request of Gulf allies to give diplomacy more time, even as he continues pressing for a swift resolution to the crisis.
