Trump Yells At Netanyahu Over Lebanon Escalation: ‘What The Hell Are You Doing?’
NEW YORK (VINnews) — According to a report by Axios, U.S. President Donald Trump sharply rebuked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a phone call Monday night over Israel’s escalation in Lebanon, after Iran reportedly threatened to abandon negotiations with the United States because of Israeli actions.
According to a U.S. source who summarized Trump’s remarks, he told Netanyahu:
“You’re completely crazy. You’d be in jail if it weren’t for me. I’m saving your (expletive). Everyone hates you now. Everyone hates Israel because of this.”
Another source briefed on the call said Trump was “angry” and at one point shouted at Netanyahu: “What the hell are you doing?”
According to the report, Trump also warned that an attack on Beirut would further isolate Israel and blocked an Israeli plan to strike targets in the Lebanese capital.
On the Israeli side, Netanyahu issued a statement saying that he told Trump Israel would strike targets in Beirut if Hezbollah did not stop attacking Israel and that Israel would meanwhile continue its operations in southern Lebanon. Netanyahu wrote: “Our position remains unchanged.”
In contrast, a second American source claimed that Trump effectively “steamrolled” Netanyahu during the conversation and that Netanyahu responded: “Okay, okay, just make sure everything is taken care of.”
After the call, Trump wrote on his social-media platform, Truth Social, that negotiations with Iran were “continuing at a rapid pace.”
According to Axios, the memorandum of understanding being discussed between the United States and Iran includes a requirement to end the fighting in Lebanon.
Following the report, conservative media personality Mark Levin strongly criticized the leak of the call’s contents to Axios, arguing that: “The leak to Axios was a violation of federal law and provided support to the Iranian regime and its proxy Hezbollah.”
He added: “Whoever leaked the story to Barak Ravid at Axios did a grave disservice to our country, our president, Israel, and Israel’s prime minister.”
Levin warned that:”The Iranian regime will benefit from this leak,” because, in his view, officials in Tehran would interpret it as evidence that the United States is “weak and desperate for a deal” and even as coming to Hezbollah’s defense.
He also argued that:”The Israeli people will be furious,” since, as he put it, “The missiles are aimed at them, not at Washington.”
Levin claimed that what was intended as a “devastating political blow” against Netanyahu through the leaking of a private conversation between heads of state had instead caused:”Significant damage to us and to our military and diplomatic strategy.”
He said that anyone who believes Israel should sacrifice its survival for the sake of a diplomatic agreement is in for: “A very hard lesson.”
Levin added:”If the contents of the call are accurate, that is serious enough in my view,” and demanded to know: “Will there be an FBI investigation to determine who leaked it? And if not, why not?”
Former IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, chairman of the “Yashar!” party, responded:”A prime minister who places his personal and legal interests ahead of the good of the state and sacrifices the north and its residents for that purpose owes an explanation to the people of Israel and must end his tenure.”
Member of Knesset Elazar Stern of the Yesh Atid party said:”When your best friend and ours, U.S. President Donald Trump, whom you claimed ‘does whatever Netanyahu wants,’ tells Israel’s prime minister, ‘Everyone hates you now,’ that harms every Israeli and every Jew, both in Israel and in the Diaspora.”
He added: “The racist and disgraceful statements made during this government’s tenure by its ministers and advisers have contributed greatly to such a sentiment.”
