JERUSALEM (VINnews) – Israeli security forces have recovered the body of Staff Sgt. Oron Shaul, an Israel Defense Forces soldier killed in Gaza in 2014 and held by Hamas terrorists for nearly a decade, the military announced.

The recovery took place in January 2025 during a covert operation in Gaza, according to details cleared for publication. Shaul was killed in battle during Operation Protective Edge in July 2014 and his body was taken by Hamas.

Israeli forces detained a Hamas terrorist in Gaza during the operation who allegedly held Shaul’s remains for almost 10 years. A prosecutor’s declaration has been filed against the suspect ahead of a planned indictment, authorities said.

Shaul’s body was returned to Israel for a proper burial.
