TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida lawmakers voted Tuesday to place a proposed property tax overhaul on the November ballot that would significantly expand the state’s homestead exemption and reduce property taxes for many homeowners.
Under the proposal, homeowners whose primary residence has a taxable value of $150,000 or less would pay property taxes only for schools beginning next year. The exemption threshold would increase to $250,000 in 2028 and then be adjusted annually for inflation.
Supporters, including Gov. Ron DeSantis and Republican lawmakers, said the measure would provide tax relief and force local governments to prioritize spending. Critics, including Democrats and local government officials, warned the proposal could reduce county revenues by billions of dollars and strain funding for local services.
The constitutional amendment will appear on Florida’s November ballot, where it must receive at least 60% voter approval to take effect.
