NEW YORK (VINnews) — New York City will honor the NBA champion New York Knicks with a ticker-tape parade and a City Hall ceremony later this week, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Saturday night following the team’s title-clinching victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

The Knicks defeated the Spurs 93-90 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals to capture the franchise’s first NBA championship since 1973, ending a 53-year title drought.

Mamdani said the city will host a ticker-tape parade and a ceremony at City Hall on Thursday, June 18, where members of the championship team will receive Keys to the City. The event will mark the first ticker-tape parade in Knicks franchise history.

“For more than 50 years, New Yorkers have waited for this moment,” Mamdani said in a statement, praising the team’s perseverance and the loyalty of generations of fans. “This team fulfilled that hope with grit, resilience and heart.”

The mayor also announced that City Hall and several municipal buildings, including the David N. Dinkins Manhattan Municipal Building and Brooklyn Borough Hall, will be illuminated in blue and orange to celebrate the championship.

City officials said additional details regarding parade logistics, the City Hall ceremony, and media access will be released Sunday.

The championship sparked celebrations across the city, from neighborhoods in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan to the area surrounding Madison Square Garden, where fans gathered to celebrate the long-awaited title.

The Knicks’ victory delivered the franchise’s third NBA championship and its first in more than five decades, ending one of the longest title droughts in professional sports.
