Jewish Family of Park Avenue Shooting Victim Plans $65 Million Lawsuit Against New York City

Jun 14, 2026·2 min read

NEW YORK (VINnews) — The family of a young Jewish real estate professional killed in the deadly mass shooting at a Midtown Manhattan office tower last year plans to seek $65 million in damages from New York City, alleging that a police officer assigned to security at the building failed to recognize and respond to an armed attacker before the violence unfolded, according to court filings first reported by the New York Post.

The planned lawsuit was filed on behalf of the family of Julia Hyman, a 27-year-old Jewish employee who was among four people killed when a gunman opened fire inside 345 Park Avenue on July 28, 2025.

According to the filing, attorneys for Hyman’s family reviewed surveillance footage from the building and contend that Didarul Islam, an NYPD detective working a paid security assignment at the property, had an unobstructed view of the gunman as he approached the building carrying a rifle. The filing alleges that the officer failed to take action to identify or stop the threat before the shooter entered the lobby.

Islam was the first person shot during the attack and later died from his injuries. The detective, a husband and father, was posthumously honored by the NYPD for his service.

The family’s legal filing argues that because Islam was working through the department’s paid detail program, the city may bear responsibility for his actions while assigned to the building. Attorneys for the Hyman family said they are investigating all circumstances that may have contributed to the attack and are exploring potential claims against multiple parties.

Investigators said the gunman, identified as Shane Tamura, traveled from Nevada to New York and entered the office tower armed with a rifle. Authorities believe he intended to reach offices occupied by the NFL but instead went to another floor, where Hyman was fatally shot. Three other victims were also killed during the attack.

City officials said they would review the legal claims. No court ruling has been made on the allegations, and the claims remain assertions contained in the family’s filing.

The case is expected to focus on questions surrounding building security, police responsibilities during paid assignments, and whether any actions could have prevented the gunman from entering the skyscraper.
