Montreal Police Officer Killed in Shooting Near Jewish Community Institutions

Jun 22, 2026·2 min read

MONTREAL (VINnews) — A Montreal police officer was killed and another officer wounded Monday after a shooting in the city’s Côte-des-Neiges borough, a neighborhood home to a large Jewish community and several Jewish institutions.

“It is with immense sadness that we confirm the death of one of our police officers in the line of duty,” the Montreal Police Service said in a statement.

Police said a suspect was fatally shot following the incident, which also left a civilian injured. Authorities continued investigating Monday night.

The shooting occurred near Decarie Boulevard and Westbury Avenue, close to several Jewish community institutions, including schools, synagogues and community organizations. The area is home to a large Chabad presence and one of Montreal’s largest Jewish populations.

Rabbi Chaim Shlomo Cohen, a local Chabad emissary, told Isreali news Ynet, that police directed dozens of people into a nearby Chabad House for shelter during the incident.

“There are about 100 people here,” Cohen told Israeli media. “Police came in and said no one was allowed to leave the building.”

Residents described a massive police response, with heavily armed officers, helicopters overhead and streets sealed off as authorities searched the area.

Police later announced that the suspect had been “neutralized” and that the immediate threat had ended. The identities of those involved were not immediately released.

Authorities have not indicated that the Jewish community was specifically targeted, and the motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
