NEW YORK (VINnews) – A group of New Yorkers injured in e-bike crashes plans to sue Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration over a policy that halted enforcement of certain low-level e-bike violations, according to the New York Post.
The lawsuit, expected to be filed Thursday, argues that the administration’s March directive has contributed to unsafe conditions for pedestrians and cyclists by reducing accountability for reckless riders, the Post reported.
The legal challenge comes amid broader debates over the city’s growing network of protected bike lanes and the rise of e-bikes on New York streets. Critics contend that electric bikes have increased safety risks, while transportation advocates argue expanded cycling infrastructure improves mobility and reduces traffic-related injuries.
According to the New York Post, opponents of a proposed protected bike lane on Manhattan’s Upper West Side have accused transportation advocacy groups of exerting outsized influence over local planning decisions. Supporters of the project maintain the redesign will enhance safety for cyclists and pedestrians alike.
The Post also cited a recent study showing a significant increase in injuries involving bicycles and scooters, with electric-powered vehicles accounting for a growing share of trauma cases treated at New York hospitals.
City Hall has not publicly responded to the planned lawsuit. The Mamdani administration has continued to promote expanded bike infrastructure as part of its transportation agenda.
