Differences Emerge Between Leading Haredi Rabbis Over Protest Strategy
JERUSALEM (VINnews) – A rare public disagreement has emerged between two of the most influential leaders of Israel’s Lithuanian-Haredi community over how to respond to the government’s military conscription policies.
Rabbi Dov Lando has urged followers to avoid street demonstrations, saying public protests are not the traditional approach of the Haredi community and can damage its public image.
His comments come just days after fellow senior rabbinic leader Rabbi Moshe Hillel Hirsch expressed support for a large protest convoy opposing the proposed draft law and the arrests of yeshiva students accused of evading military service.
Speaking during a meeting with yeshiva leaders in Bnei Brak, Rabbi Lando said the community’s primary response should be increased dedication to Torah study rather than public demonstrations, describing spiritual commitment as the strongest answer to the current challenges.
The meeting was originally convened to discuss a recent fundraising mission to the United States to help offset reductions in government funding for yeshivas. During his remarks, Rabbi Lando also said Jewish communities abroad understand the central role of Torah study in Israel and have increased their financial support for the country’s yeshivas.
