The Stony Point Police Department is reminding residents and visitors to prioritize safety on the Hudson River as summer gets underway and more families head out on the water.
In a public message marking the first day of summer and Father's Day, the department encouraged boaters, anglers, paddlers, and recreational users to take proper precautions before launching. Safety recommendations include wearing life jackets, ensuring vessels are equipped with required safety gear, checking weather and river conditions, filing a float plan, and avoiding the operation of boats while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Police noted that unlike a roadway, boaters on the Hudson River cannot simply pull over if their vessel experiences mechanical issues, making preparation before departure especially important.
The department also highlighted the role of law enforcement and emergency response agencies, including the Rockland County Sheriff's Office Marine Division, which regularly patrol the river throughout the boating season.
Officials encouraged residents to enjoy the summer while remaining vigilant and prepared, emphasizing that safe boating practices can help prevent accidents and emergencies on the water.
