JERUSALEM (VINnews) — An Israeli army captain was killed and another soldier was lightly wounded during an overnight operation in southern Lebanon, the military said Sunday.

The IDF identified the fallen soldier as Capt. David Hazut, 21, of Ashkelon, a platoon commander in the Golani Brigade’s 12th Battalion. His family has been notified.

According to an initial military investigation, Golani reconnaissance troops were conducting a search of a building in the village of Deir Seryan, about three miles (five kilometers) from the Israeli border, when a gunman hiding in a stairwell opened fire at close range. Hazut was killed in the attack, while another soldier sustained light wounds and was evacuated to a hospital.

The attacker fled the scene. The IDF said it later carried out airstrikes on Hezbollah infrastructure in the village and launched a manhunt for the gunman. Israeli forces continue operating in the area.
