CHAREIDI TENSIONS BOIL OVER: MK Moshe Gafni Blasts Opposition, Legal Adviser, And Takes Swipe At Shas Voters
A routine Knesset Finance Committee meeting erupted into a heated political confrontation Monday as MK Moshe Gafni launched a blistering attack on the opposition and the Attorney General’s Office before taking an unexpected swipe at Shas voters during the debate.
Speaking during discussions surrounding the daycare funding crisis and legislation affecting the Chareidi community, Gafni said the legal establishment has consistently worked against Chareidim. “There isn’t a single issue in our lives where the Attorney General is with us,” he said. “She is against us. Period. Our lives are in the garbage when it comes to this.”
His remarks immediately drew a sharp response from MK Naor Shiri, who argued that the families of IDF reservists and bereaved families not the Chareidi public are the ones facing the greatest hardships, triggering a shouting match inside the committee.
Later in the debate, Shiri accused the Chareidi education system of ethnic discrimination. Responding to the criticism, Gafni said that 60 percent of the girls attending his granddaughter’s school in Bnei Brak are from Sephardic families and insisted he has never viewed the issue through an ethnic lens.
Gafni then turned his criticism toward Shas supporters, saying, “I don’t understand. They established schools for Sephardic Jews with Sephardic customs, so why don’t they send their own children there? But that’s not a question I ask.”
The exchange came amid the ongoing political battle over the proposed Torah Study Basic Law and the broader dispute surrounding legislation affecting the Chareidi community, including the daycare funding crisis.
