Governor Signs Wieder Bill Expanding Correction Officers' Residency Options
ALBANY, NY — Governor Kathy Hochul has signed Assembly Bill A10080B into law.
The measure, sponsored by Assemblyman Aron Wieder (D-Rockland), expands residency rules for correction officers at local jails in Rockland and Orange counties. Officers may now live in either county, any adjacent New York county, or — for those employed as of April 4, 2026 — within 45 miles.
“Our correction officers perform an essential and demanding job every day, and they deserve policies that help recruit and retain the best workforce possible,” Wieder said. “This new law gives Orange and Rockland counties the flexibility they need to strengthen staffing. I’m proud to have partnered with Senator Harckham, our legislative colleagues, and especially thank Sheriff Louis Falco for his leadership. I’m grateful to Governor Hochul for signing it into law.”
The bill passed the Assembly on March 30 and takes effect immediately.
