Rockland Writes: Enough Is Enough - Enforce Dump Truck Restrictions

To who this may concern,

I am writing to express my growing concern about the increasing number of large dump trucks traveling through our residential neighborhoods. While I appreciate that the Town of Ramapo has installed "No Trucks" signs on many roads, the reality is that these restrictions are too often ignored because violators are not being held accountable enough through consistent enforcement.

My family moved from Williamsburg to Monsey to enjoy the peace and safety of a suburban community. Sadly sometimes it feels like I'm living on top of the BQE all over again. The constant stream of heavy dump trucks rattling through residential streets is not only disruptive, but also poses a serious danger to our children, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. Today, waiting for the school busses, I counted over 50 YES, FIFTY trucks.

These trucks have no business using residential side streets as shortcuts. They create unnecessary noise, contribute to road damage, and most importantly, put lives at risk. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't wait for a tragedy G-d forbid before taking action.

While some streets already have signs prohibiting truck traffic these rules must be backed by consistent enforcement. Without enforcement, the signs become little more than suggestions. It is possible that a uniform Townwide ban is the solution.

My cousin lives in Montebello, where there is zero tolerance for violating residential truck restrictions. Drivers know the rules are enforced, I beseech the board to adopt the same level of commitment to protecting our neighborhoods. ALL children are EQUALLY precious.

I respectfully urge to increase enforcement of existing truck restrictions, conduct targeted enforcement operations on known problem streets, and ensure that violators are issued citations. I have TREMENDOUS respect to the Police Dept. but they can only do so much with the resources they have. Perhaps the County and New York State Police commercial enforcement unit can assist. Residents deserve to know that the laws already on the books are being upheld.

Our neighborhoods should be safe places where children can ride their bikes, families can walk, and residents can enjoy the quiet character that drew so many of us here. I urge you to make this issue a priority before a preventable tragedy occurs.

Thank you for your time, your service, and your attention to this important matter.

Respectfully,

Mrs. L. Schwartz, Carlton Rd.
