MA’ARAS HAMACHPEILAH: Major Renovation Project Begins for First Time
A major renovation project has begun at the Meoras HaMachpela after Israeli authorities transferred planning authority from the Hebron municipality, marking the first large-scale construction work at the historic site.
The project includes installing a permanent roof over part of the complex and upgrading electrical, air conditioning, drainage, and lighting systems. Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Settlements Minister Orit Strook attended the launch of the work, calling it a historic milestone that strengthens Israel’s responsibility for one of Judaism’s holiest sites.
Smotrich said the project reflects the Jewish people’s deep connection to the site and their roots in Hebron, while Strook described the construction as a significant expression of ownership and long-term commitment to the holy site.
