SUPREME COURT BACKS DISMISSAL: IDF Moving to Permanently Remove Gaza Division Intelligence Officer Over Oct. 7 Failures
The Supreme Court of Israel has rejected a petition filed by the former Gaza Division intelligence officer, Lt. Col. A., clearing the way for the Israel Defense Forces to move forward with his permanent dismissal over his role in the failures surrounding the October 7 Hamas attack.
The officer challenged a decision by IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, who ordered his immediate dismissal last November as part of a broader effort to remove senior officers deemed responsible for the catastrophic intelligence and operational failures. The decision was based on the findings of a commission led by Maj. Gen. Sami Turgeman, which concluded that several senior officers bore primary responsibility for the failures that enabled the Hamas assault.
Military investigations identified Lt. Col. A., who served as the Gaza Division’s intelligence officer on the morning of October 7, as one of the central figures in the intelligence breakdown. According to the findings, investigators concluded that serious failures in his performance contributed to the IDF’s lack of preparedness and its inability to prevent the Hamas infiltration into southern Israel.
The officer had already been removed from his position by Intelligence Directorate chief Shlomi Binder, while Defense Minister Israel Katz barred him from serving in any command or intelligence-related role.
With the Supreme Court rejecting his appeal, the IDF is expected to convene a special military panel in the coming weeks to formally terminate his service, bringing his military career to an end.
