U.S. APPROVES GPT-5.6: OpenAI Set To Launch Next Generation Of AI Models After Government Review
OpenAI is set to roll out its new GPT-5.6 family of artificial intelligence models after receiving approval from the U.S. government following an extensive review process, according to a report by Axios. The company announced that the new lineup—consisting of three separate models named Sol, Terra, and Luna—will begin launching to the public on Thursday, with preview access already expanding to additional users.
While OpenAI has not officially announced which users will receive access first, the initial rollout is expected to be limited to paid subscribers before expanding more broadly.
The GPT-5.6 family is designed to serve different types of users. Sol is the company’s most advanced and powerful model, built for demanding tasks such as advanced software development, research, cybersecurity, and complex data analysis. Terra is intended for everyday use, including writing, coding, and information analysis, while Luna is the fastest and most cost-effective model, optimized for simpler tasks requiring fewer computing resources.
The new models were initially made available about two weeks ago to a limited group of organizations that underwent screening by the U.S. government. Officials reportedly restricted the early release over concerns that increasingly capable AI systems could potentially be used to compromise cybersecurity systems, impact critical industries, or enable sensitive technology to reach adversarial nations such as China.
Following additional testing and meetings between OpenAI executives and U.S. government officials, the company was cleared to proceed with a broader launch. The evaluation process was conducted by the Center for AI Standards and Innovation within the U.S. Department of Commerce, with OpenAI sending technical experts to Washington to address questions raised during the review.
