Ground Broken On New 21 Story Luxury Tower Next To West Palm Beach Brightline Station Big news for downtown West Palm Beach. Developers LD&D and IGEQ, with investment partner FrontRange Capital Partners, officially broke ground Friday on a 21 story project at 506 Datura Street. The development will include the Alida Residences, a 181 unit multifamily tower, plus a Marriott Tribute Portfolio boutique hotel. Mayor Keith James joined the developers and partners for the ceremony. Alida will bring studios, one, two, and three bedroom apartments along with a 21st floor rooftop pool deck. Developers say it will be the first true rooftop pool on a high rise multifamily building in downtown, offering views of the Intracoastal, The Breakers, and the ocean. The project faced rezoning, pandemic delays, and a redesign since the site was assembled in 2019, but is now moving forward as the first new downtown high rise multifamily to break ground since The Laurel.

As Florida's beaches fill with roped-off sea turtle nests and warning signs marking nesting areas during the annual nesting season, conservation groups are warning that a new federal rule would remove key habitat protections that have helped the endangered animals recover. The rule, set to take effect Sept. 14, would eliminate the Endangered Species Act's longstanding definition of "harm" that includes the destruction or degradation of critical habitat. Under the change, the law would primarily prohibit directly killing or injuring protected species, but not necessarily the destruction of the beaches they rely on for nesting.

Tampa International Airport will privatize most Transportation Security Administration operations, just months after President Donald Trump unveiled a 2027 budget proposal that called for handing more airport security over to private companies. In a statement to CNN on Monday, Tampa International Airport said it “opted in” to the TSA Gold+ program, a new public/private partnership screening program. TSA will still have regulatory oversight of the airport’s screening operations, and the checkpoints will have to follow TSA rules, but the employees will be hired and security equipment managed by a company instead of the federal government. Participation in the new program is voluntary and requires airports to apply.

South Florida has one of the nation's highest rates of Alzheimer's disease, but experts say access to diagnosis, treatment and long-term care continues to fall short as the population ages. Nearly 600,000 Floridians age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer's, and experts warn that number is expected to rise sharply in the coming decades. Dr. Marc Agronin of Miami Jewish Health said advances in early detection offer hope, but many families struggle to afford care, particularly those who do not qualify for public assistance. He urged people to prioritize brain health through exercise, a healthy diet, social engagement and a sense of purpose while encouraging those with memory concerns to seek evaluation at specialized memory centers.

A Leon County judge is expected to rule by Monday on whether Republican gubernatorial candidate James Fishback meets Florida's constitutional requirement that governors be state residents for at least seven years. The challenge was brought by Lt. Gov. Jay Collins, who argues Fishback's voting records and mortgage documents show he was a Washington, D.C., resident during the required period. Collins' attorneys pointed to records showing Fishback voted in Washington in 2020 and listed a D.C. condominium as his primary residence on 2021 mortgage paperwork. Fishback acknowledged the records but testified that Florida remained his true residence. He said he mistakenly registered to vote in Washington while temporarily living there during the COVID-19 pandemic and accidentally listed his D.C. condo as his primary residence on mortgage documents signed in haste. Judge David Frank said he plans to issue a ruling by 5 p.m. next week Monday on whether Fishback's name will remain on the Republican primary ballot.
