Man Armed With Sword Arrested On La Brea A man reportedly armed with a sword was arrested Wednesday on the 800 block of North La Brea Avenue. Police took the man into custody without further incident.

Brush Fire Burning Along 405 Near Getty Center A brush fire broke out Wednesday afternoon in the hills alongside the 405 Freeway near the Getty Center, sending smoke into the Sepulveda Pass area. The fire was reported shortly after 4:15 p.m., burning above the northbound 405. Firefighters are actively battling the flames in heavy vegetation. As of the latest update, no injuries have been reported, and it remains unclear whether any structures are threatened. The cause is not yet known. This is a developing situation and LA Scoop will update as more information becomes available.

Major Firefighter Response Along 405 Near Getty Center — Avoid The 405 A major firefighting response is underway along the 405 Freeway near Getty Center Drive after a brush fire broke out shortly after 4:15 p.m. Wednesday. The fire has burned about five acres, with numerous additional fire engines requested and water-dropping aircraft attacking the flames from above. Smoke is spreading across the Sepulveda Pass. Drivers should avoid the 405 through the Sepulveda Pass if possible as the emergency response may cause significant delays. Benedict Canyon can be a good alternate route between the Valley and Westside, depending on your destination and traffic conditions.

Downtown LA Ties Record At 105° As Valley Bakes Los Angeles endured another scorcher Wednesday, with Downtown LA reaching 105 degrees — tying the September 9 record set in 2024. The normal high for the date is just 84 degrees. The Valley was even hotter. Burbank hit 106 degrees, while Van Nuys Airport reached 107 degrees, with some local readings around Van Nuys hitting 108. Antisemitic Graffiti Targets Ventura Synagogue, Church And Park Ventura Police are investigating disturbing antisemitic vandalism after swastikas and messages including “Death to Jews” were spray-painted at Temple Beth Torah, neighboring Higher Vision Church and nearby Juanamaria Park. Police were first called Sunday morning, September 6. Investigators believe some of the vandalism may have occurred overnight Saturday into Sunday. Additional graffiti was discovered at Juanamaria Park the following day. Ventura Mayor Jeannette Sánchez-Palacios condemned the attacks, saying antisemitism and intimidation have no place in the city. Police are investigating and asking anyone with information or surveillance footage to come forward.

Large Eucalyptus Tree Falls on Rosewood between Gardner and Vista A large eucalyptus tree came crashing down tonight on Rosewood Avenue, between Gardner and Vista blocking the street and falling onto 3 parked vehicles. Baruch Hashem nobody was hurt. This is another reminder of how dangerous some of LA’s massive older trees can be. Just days ago, a falling tree in Los Feliz struck a vehicle and injured a person. We need to be extremely careful around these large trees and report trees or branches that appear unstable. They can come down with little warning and, chas v’shalom, seriously hurt someone. The city considers a fallen tree or one in danger of falling a “tree emergency” that should be reported through MyLA311.

Missing Frum Boy Found Safe After Massive Community Search A frightening situation ended with good news overnight after a frum boy was reported missing in Los Angeles at around 11 p.m. Hatzolah of Los Angeles quickly mobilized, with a large number of community members joining the search and helping look for the boy. Hatzolah operates around the clock with volunteer responders serving several Jewish neighborhoods across Los Angeles. Baruch Hashem, after several anxious hours, the boy was located safely. The incident once again showed the incredible strength of our community — when someone needs help, people immediately drop what they are doing and come together.

Car Plunges Off DTLA Overpass, Driver Killed A horrific crash occurred in Downtown Los Angeles shortly after 2:30 a.m. Friday when a car traveling on upper Grand Avenue crashed through a railing and plunged approximately 40–50 feet onto lower Grand Avenue. The vehicle landed upside down. The 30-year-old driver, who was the only person inside, was pronounced dead at the scene. Remarkably, nobody below was reported injured. Police are investigating what caused the driver to lose control and go through the railing.

California Moves To Recognize Jewish Identity As An Ethnicity California lawmakers have approved a major package of bills aimed at combating antisemitism, protecting religious observance and formally recognizing Jewish identity beyond religion. SB 1387 would make California the first state to recognize Jewish identity as an ethnicity in state law. When state agencies voluntarily collect ethnicity or ancestry information, residents would be given a separate option to identify as Jewish. Supporters say this could provide better data on antisemitic hate crimes, education and other issues affecting Jewish Californians. Other bills sent to Gov. Gavin Newsom would strengthen protections around houses of worship, expand security grants to off-site religious events, and help prevent major government and public-school events from being scheduled on religious holidays such as Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The measures have passed the Legislature but are not yet law. Newsom has until September 30 to sign or veto them.

Deadly Crash Outside Valley Beth Shalom On First Day Of Rosh Hashanah A violent two-car crash occurred Shabbos morning, the first day of Rosh Hashanah, directly outside Valley Beth Shalom in Encino, one of the largest Conservative Jewish temples in Los Angeles. The crash involved a blue Tesla and a white Lexus near Ventura Boulevard and Densmore Avenue. One of the vehicles also slammed into a pole during the collision. Six people were taken to hospitals, and one woman later died from her injuries. Ventura Boulevard was closed while emergency crews responded and police investigated the crash.

Powerful Waves Batter Southern California Coast Southern California’s coastline is taking a beating, with high tides, powerful waves and significant beach erosion from San Diego to Malibu. Some beaches have lost large amounts of sand, with coastal infrastructure also taking damage in Laguna Beach. Large swells from Hurricane Marie, combined with unusually warm ocean water and elevated sea levels, have intensified the pounding. Water levels along parts of the Southern California coast have been running roughly 6 to 10 inches above normal. A strengthening El Niño could push even more warm water toward California, potentially raising coastal water levels further. Experts warn that high tides combined with large storms could mean more coastal flooding, heavy surf and beach erosion this fall and winter.

Shipping Containers Fall Into Water At Port Of Los Angeles Several shipping containers fell off a cargo ship and plunged into the water at the Port of Los Angeles Monday morning, prompting an emergency response. The incident happened shortly before 11:30 a.m. near Berth 302. Video from the scene showed at least one large container floating in the harbor next to the massive cargo ship. It remains unclear how many containers may have sunk beneath the surface. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported. Officials have not yet determined what caused the containers to fall, and the incident remains under investigation.

Brush Fire Burns Homes In La Habra Heights A fast-moving brush fire erupted in La Habra Heights Monday afternoon, burning at least three structures and threatening additional homes. The Palos Fire started shortly before 2:30 p.m. and quickly grew to roughly 20 acres within about an hour. Video from the scene showed at least one home engulfed and destroyed as firefighters mounted a major response. The fire was reported to be spreading at a moderate rate, and crews escalated the incident to a second alarm.

DRIVER ARRESTED AFTER DEADLY CHATSWORTH BUS CRASH — NBC4 HELICOPTER COVERING THE CRASH CRASHES HOURS LATER Shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday, a Ford Expedition reportedly traveling the wrong way ran a red light, struck another vehicle and slammed into a Metro bus at Nordhoff Street and De Soto Avenue. Bus passengers Gage Weida, 31, and Daniel Castillo, 46, were killed — one inside the bus and the other after being ejected. Six others were injured. SUV driver Bailee Lynn Rios, 36, survived and was arrested on suspicion of murder. Just before 7 p.m., NBC4’s NewsChopper4, which had been covering the crash, went down near the 9100 block of N. Mason Avenue. Reporter Eliana Moreno, pilot George Marciniw, and Edy Gutierrez Mejia, 29, who was on the ground, were killed. Two others were hospitalized. Five people were killed between the two tragedies. The helicopter crash is under investigation by the NTSB and FAA.

FEDERAL CRACKDOWN ON L.A. HOMELESS FUNDS Federal authorities announced arrests Wednesday in an investigation into alleged fraud involving taxpayer money meant to help L.A.’s homeless population. MAN GOES ON PROFANITY-LACED TIRADE AT L.A. CITY HALL Longtime City Hall critic Armando Herman erupted during public comment in front of Mayor Karen Bass and other officials, accusing them of corruption and calling them “criminals” after Bass told him he had 60 seconds to speak. His accusations have not been established as fact. Today, Wednesday, Herman returned to City Hall wearing a sweatshirt displaying a swastika. His public-comment time was cut short after he shouted insults and slurs at council members. Herman has a long history of disruptive and highly offensive appearances at government meetings.

Where Have All The Kids Gone? LAUSD Enrollment Plunges As School Closures Loom Los Angeles Unified is facing another sharp drop in students, with enrollment down about 4% this school year, significantly faster than officials expected. LAUSD now serves fewer than 400,000 students, compared with more than 700,000 two decades ago. The decline is largely tied to fewer children being born in Los Angeles and families with children leaving the area amid high housing and living costs. Charter and private schools have also drawn some students away from LAUSD. With fewer students but nearly the same number of campuses, officials say some schools may eventually need to be closed or consolidated. No specific schools have yet been selected.

Person Struck At Gardner & Clinton This Evening Emergency crews responded this evening to a traffic collision at Gardner Street and Clinton Street around 7.30 this evening. Initial reports indicate a person was struck by a vehicle, with LAFD firefighters and paramedics responding to the scene. The emergency incident log currently lists the call as a collision involving a bicycle. The extent of the person’s injuries is not yet known.

Deadly 5 Freeway Crash — SigAlert Still In Effect A deadly crash is continuing to cause problems on the 5 Freeway in Boyle Heights this morning. A white Kia flew off the freeway around 2:15 a.m. this morning and became wedged beneath an overpass, killing the driver. The SigAlert remains in effect, and the northbound 5 connector to the eastbound 10 remains CLOSED while crews work at the scene. Caltrans is advising drivers to use an alternate route. Expect delays in the area through at least the next few hours.

Another Earthquake Hits Near Compton A magnitude 3.1 earthquake struck near Compton at approximately 1:32 p.m. Thursday, with the epicenter reported about 2 miles from Compton. The quake comes amid a noticeable stretch of seismic activity in the area. Earlier this month, a 3.2 quake struck near Compton, followed days later by a swarm of dozens of smaller earthquakes in the South LA area. No damage has been reported so far from today’s quake. Earthquake information is preliminary and can be revised as seismologists review the data.

Southern California Residents Get Sneak Peek Inside New Burbank Airport Terminal Hollywood Burbank Airport gave registered Southern California residents an early look inside its brand-new passenger terminal this morning during a special 9 a.m. to noon passenger simulation. The event was free but required advance registration and reached capacity before the event. Participants were assigned mock flights and went through the real travel process — parking, check-in, TSA screening and arriving at their departure gate. They then provided feedback to help airport officials identify any problems before opening day. The new 355,000-square-foot, 14-gate terminal is scheduled to officially open October 13. Coyote Chases Bear Up A Tree In Running Springs A wild nighttime encounter caught on camera in Running Springs shows a coyote chasing a much larger bear, with the bear scrambling up a tree to get away. Despite the huge difference in size, coyotes can aggressively harass larger animals, and this bear apparently decided climbing the tree was the safest option. The remarkable video is another example of the frequent wildlife encounters in the San Bernardino Mountains, where both bears and coyotes are commonly seen, particularly at night.

LA Relaxes Street Cleaning Parking Enforcement For Yom Kippur Los Angeles will relax parking enforcement for Yom Kippur, including street-cleaning/alternate-side restrictions, posted time limits and preferential parking restrictions in designated areas.
