First-Ever Kosher Restaurant Coming to CSUN A major milestone for Jewish life at CSUN: the keys have officially been handed over for Karne, the university's first-ever kosher restaurant. Located in the CSUN bookstore complex, Karne is scheduled to open in August 2026 and will provide students, faculty, and visitors with on-campus kosher dining for the first time in the university's history. The project is the culmination of years of advocacy and effort by students, community members, and campus leaders who worked to bring kosher food options to campus. Chabad at CSUN also thanked university leadership, supporters, and partners who helped make the project a reality, with special recognition to Rabbi Mendy Paul, who will oversee the restaurant's operations. While receiving the keys marks a major achievement, work is now underway to prepare the space ahead of the grand opening later this summer. --

LAHSA has been unable to verify the existence of almost 2,300 housing sites it’s responsible for. Bass, the brother of Mayor Karen Bass, is one of many plaintiffs suing the city of LA and others after losing his home in the Palisades Fire - that his sister presided over. Mayor Bass was infamously in Ghana during the fire. According to the lawsuit, Kenneth’s home was totally burnt down, and he suffered "Smoke Inhalation" and "Emotional Distress." Fire breaks out at Six Flags Magic Mountain Yesterday a fire broke out underneath the legendary X2 roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia. Footage from the park showed a palm tree engulfed in flames underneath the roller coaster. The fire spread to cover about half an acre, and blanketed the area with smoke. Fire crews prevented the blaze from threatening any nearby structures, and no evacuations were needed. No guests or firefighters suffered any injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation. --

LAPD shoots family dog during Knicks championship celebration in Canoga Park Officers responding to a call on Saturday about a screaming woman shot and killed a dog. The dog, named Jameson, was a 2-year-old golden retriever, Saint Bernard and poodle mix. She finished first in all three south LA districts, including a commanding 62% of the vote in District 8, which includes Crenshaw and Hyde Park. Bass also won 45% in District 10, which includes Koreatown and parts of Mid-City, and 42% in District 9, which covers the USC and the Vermont Square area. Raman's strongest support came from the city's central and eastside-adjacent neighborhoods. She won 45% of the vote in District 13, which includes Hollywood and Echo Park, and also performed strongly in Districts 1 and 14, winning 40% and 38%, respectively. Smash-And-Grab Robbery At West Covina Jewelry Store Five masked suspects armed with hammers stormed a jewelry store at Plaza West Covina Sunday evening, smashing multiple display cases and making off with an undisclosed amount of jewelry. The study found that the increased stress levels may enable the Cajon Pass to act as an “earthquake gate,” allowing a future earthquake to pass from the San Andreas fault into the San Jacinto fault, heavily impacting LA.

California admits to using “high-risk” AI systems to make consequential decisions about Californians lives A 2023 law mandates the state disclose it’s use of “High Risk” AI systems, defined as systems that are: “used to assist or replace human discretionary decisions that have a legal or similarly significant effect.” In this year’s report, released Friday, the use of six high-risk AI systems were disclosed, including AI used to: • Predict whether incarcerated people will re-offend • Evaluate whether unemployment claims are fraudulent • Remotely administer exams for California State University students • Detect when college students use generative AI to write assignments The report does not include AI pilot projects ongoing in the state, including an AI system being piloted to help bussineses file their taxes. --

Former LA Fire Union Secretary Accused of Stealing $80,000 From Firefighters’ Charity A former secretary of the Los Angeles firefighters union has been charged with multiple felonies for allegedly transferring more than $80,000 from a nonprofit fund meant to help firefighters and their families into his personal bank accounts. Adam Walker worked as a Union secretary and Chairman of the foundation from December 2022 and January 2024. Major Development Planned for Pico-Robertson A major new mixed-use development is being proposed for the southwest corner of Pico Boulevard and Beverwil Drive in Pico-Robertson. Plans filed with the City of Los Angeles call for the construction of 242 apartments, including one-, two-, and three-bedroom units, above ground-floor retail space. The project would also include a large underground parking garage with nearly 400 spaces. The 1.73-acre site at 9700 W. Pico Blvd. sold for approximately $24 million last year. To make way for the project, existing commercial buildings and parking lots would be demolished. The developer is seeking density bonus incentives and has proposed setting aside 11 units for very low-income residents. If approved, this would be one of the largest residential developments proposed in the Pico-Robertson neighborhood in recent years. --

Pico Boulevard with a two-building mixed-use apartment complex. Located at the southwest corner of Pico and Beverwil, the application calls for 242 apartments, 4,150 square feet of ground-floor retail space, and underground parking for 397 vehicles. Existing commercial buildings and parking areas on the 1.73 acre site would be razed, and 11 of the new housing units would be reserved for very low-income residents. --
6:11 AMMassive Boyle-Heights fire sparks air-quality concerns Following a massive fire at a Boyle-Heights warehouse on Wednesday, concerns about air-quality remain after ammonia was leaked into the air. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze by air-dropping water from helicopters, after the ammonia forced firefighters to retreat from the building’s roof for their own safety. A shelter in place order for the immediate area was lifted, but a Particle Pollution Advisory was put in place through 10am this morning in Boyle Heights, East L.A., Montebello and Downtown L.A. The cause of the fire in under investigation, but the warehouse company involved, Lineage Logistics, has been previously accused of unsafe conditions, and the building previously caught fire in 2024. --

Police investigate “suspicious package” on the 405 Freeway A section of the 405 Freeway near Sunset Boulevard was temporarily shut down in both directions this afternoon, as police investigated a suspicious package found on the side of the freeway. The California Highway Patrol warned drivers of delays on the 405, as they investigated. ARMED HOME INVASION IN FAIRFAX: Resident Assaulted During Break-In Police are searching for two suspects after an armed home invasion on the 800 block of North Detroit Street left a resident assaulted. Two Israeli citizens, both believed to be in their 40s, were killed overnight in a tragic single-vehicle crash near Malibu in Los Angeles. Jewish ex-staffer sues Pamona College over Jew-Hating Protests Melody DiDonato, a Jewish former IT worker at Pamona College, is suing the school over Antisemitic “Pro-Palestine” protests and campus takeovers that forced her to leave her job. DiDonato’s lawyer says the protests “prevented… my client from having free access to the whole of her community, and she was subjected to discriminatory and harassing conduct on campus in violation of the law.” DiDonato also says her boss made comments about Israeli Prime Minister that made her feel “targeted as a Jewish-American person,” and that she submitted a complaint to the College’s HR department, which made no effort to address her concerns.
