Message to the Admin: A notice to the Community The following was sent by a Baltimore Scoop follower I gave a ride earlier this morning to someone who I believe may be a Christian missionary. I first noticed him outside Agudah of Park Heights around 7:45 AM. He looked frum, but something seemed off. As soon as he got into the car, he started talking about learning and about being happy on "Nittel" (December 25). At one point I told him, "You sound like a missionary." He didn't deny it, but he also didn't confirm it. Description: Tall male, approximately in his 50s or 60s, trimmed gray beard, wearing a jacket, no hat. I dropped him off near Pinkney Road and Cross Country Boulevard. Just wanted to make people aware in case anyone else encounters him. 📲 For fast & reliable hyper-local Jewish Baltimore news: Got a Tip? Share your Mind! How Goldberg's Bagels Changed a Life The following was written by Rabbi Shraga Freedman of Living Kiddush Hashem When Rabbi Chaim Tropp, a menahel in Cincinnati, heard that the city's first Rita's Italian Ice had opened, he decided to visit with his family. As they entered the store, Rabbi Tropp and his family met the owner, an African American woman in her forties who greeted them warmly and professionally. Wanting to verify that the store was indeed kosher certified, they respectfully asked to see the certification. "It's right over here," she said proudly. "We're very happy to be certified. We very much want to accommodate the Jewish community." Curious about her enthusiasm, Rabbi Tropp asked what made the certification so meaningful to her. Her answer surprised them. She explained that she had grown up in a rough neighborhood in Baltimore. As a teenager, her first job was working for a Jewish couple, Yaakov and Chava Drebin, who owned a kosher bagel store in Baltimore called Goldberg’s New York Bagels. The experience left a lasting impression on her. She recalled that every time she looked at her paycheck, there seemed to be a little more money than expected. Without her asking for a raise, the owners would occasionally increase her pay as a way of showing appreciation for her hard work. More than the money itself, she remembered the respect, kindness, and dignity with which they treated her. Years later, those memories remained vivid. The positive experience not only shaped her view of the Jewish community, but seemed to play a meaningful role in her own personal growth and success. Being trusted, respected, and valued at a young age gave her confidence and motivation as she charted her future. From humble beginnings in Baltimore, she went on to build a successful career in corporate America, later serving as a chief financial officer for a nonprofit organization. Today, she is opening three Rita's locations throughout the Cincinnati area. Now, as the owner of Cincinnati's first Rita's location, she considers it a privilege to ensure that her business is kosher certified and welcoming to Jewish customers. As Rabbi Tropp listened to her story, he was struck by how simple acts of menschlichkeit performed years earlier by a Jewish couple in Baltimore continued to bear fruit decades later. The kindness they had shown a young employee had not been forgotten. Their willingness to recognize her efforts, treat her with dignity, and make her feel valued helped shape the trajectory of a young woman's life and created a lasting Kiddush Hashem that crossed generations and communities. This story should be a zechus for a refuah sheleima for Esther Yael bas Batsheva. Please have her in mind in your tefilos. 📲 For fast & reliable hyper-local Jewish Baltimore news: Got a Tip? This is the same CAIR Maryland whose director, Zainab Chaudry, sparked national controversy after October 7 for posts about Israel, including one claiming the world showed outrage over “40 fake Israeli babies” while ignoring Palestinian babies. Scoop’s take: From our community being called “Little West Bank,” to being told we control the media, to CAIR now backing Ruff, the message could not be clearer. The following was written by Senator Dalya Attar in the Where What When Dear Baltimore Community, I recently saw a phrase being used regarding the upcoming election that stuck with me: "Act now, or don't complain later." The more I thought about it, the more I realized how perfectly it applies to this election. Over the past several months, I have heard a consistent message from our Rabbanim and community leaders: vote. I've heard speeches about it. I've received calls about it. I've listened to Rabbanim emphasize it from the pulpit. In fact, I've even heard some say that just as we are careful to eat kosher, we have an obligation to participate in elections that directly impact our community. The message could not be clearer. But if everyone understands the importance of voting, then why do we keep repeating it? The answer is simple: because too many people still do not vote. And in an election that is expected to be one of the closest our community has seen, that reality matters more than ever. I am not simply running against another candidate with different ideas or priorities. I am facing forces that have become increasingly comfortable expressing antisemitic views openly and unapologetically. We live in a time when antisemitism is no longer whispered in private conversations - it is increasingly said out loud, defended, and even normalized. I still hear people in our community complain about the election of Zohran Mamdani in New York. Yet when you look at the numbers, the outcome was not inevitable. The votes were there. The opportunity was there. Had enough members of the frum community participated, the result could have been different. Instead, many people stayed home, and now the New York frum community must live with the consequences. Complaining after an election is easy. Voting before an election is what matters. Until now, I have conducted my campaign both inside and outside our community with a positive message. I believe in talking about accomplishments, ideas, and service. I believe in bringing people together. I believe in focusing on what we can achieve rather than what divides us. But I would be doing you a disservice if I did not share the reality of what I am seeing. My predecessor, someone with whom I worked professionally for years, told me that I was an effective legislator and that I had served constituents well. Yet she also made clear that she could not support me because I am Jewish. Her exact words to me were: "A Jew shouldn't represent the district." Think about that for a moment. Not because of my record. Not because of my work. Not because of my qualifications. Simply because I am Jewish. That is why I am writing to you today. You can flip through the rest of this publication and read about the work I have done on behalf of our community. You can review the legislation I have passed, the funding I have secured, the projects I have supported, and the countless constituent issues my office has helped resolve. But this article is not about my accomplishments. It is about something bigger. People often ask me whether I enjoy this job. That is actually a difficult question. Representing the community is one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Being able to help a family navigate a state agency, secure funding for an important project, or solve a problem that seemed impossible to solve is incredibly meaningful. But public service also comes with tremendous sacrifices. The attacks can be relentless. The scrutiny can be exhausting. The impact on my family can be difficult. And despite what many people assume, the position pays significantly less than most realize. It is technically considered a part-time position, even though the work is anything but part-time. People frequently ask me why I would choose this headache. The honest answer is that I wouldn't. I don't wake up every morning hoping for more attacks, more stress, or more controversy. But I believe Hashem guides each of us toward the place where we can best serve our community and fulfill our responsibilities. This is where He has placed me, and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve. I have also been told by respected community leaders that if we lose this election, it could set our community back fifteen years. That is not a statement I take lightly. And that is why I am asking for your help. Not for me. Not for Dalya. For our community. For our future. For every member of your household who will be 18 years old by November 3rd, please make a plan to vote. Between June 11 and June 18, you can vote early at the: Public Safety Training Facility 3500 W. Northern Parkway Or you can vote on Election Day, June 23rd, at your assigned polling location. If you will be out of town, please request a mail-in ballot immediately and vote by mail. Do not assume others will carry the burden for you. Do not assume the outcome is guaranteed. Do not assume your vote will not matter. History repeatedly proves otherwise. The truth is that in many elections, only about 30% of our community participates. Think about that. Seventy percent of eligible voters from our community stay home, and then many wonder why outcomes do not reflect our values or priorities. We can do better. We must do better. Because when elections are decided by a handful of votes, every vote truly matters. So I will leave you with the same message that inspired me to write this letter: Act now, or don't complain later. The future of our community depends on what we do today. Sincerely, Senator Dalya Attar 📲 For fast & reliable hyper-local Jewish Baltimore news: Got a Tip? Share your Mind! The following was written in the Where What When My name is Reuven Amos, and I am the only Orthodox Jewish candidate running to represent our community in the Maryland House of Delegates. My primary goal is to achieve meaningful support for private education, similar to what already exists in states and communities such as Florida, Cleveland, and Cincinnati. Families in our community work hard to provide their children with a quality Jewish education while simultaneously paying taxes to support a public school system they do not use. This places a significant financial burden on many families, yet it is an issue that too often goes unaddressed by our elected officials. There are several paths toward educational freedom. One of the most immediate and achievable steps is for Maryland to opt into the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit, as New York recently did. This program utilizes federal incentives and does not place an additional burden on the state budget. I bring experience from service in the Maryland legislature, Congress, and multiple positions within the executive branch. I am a principled and committed advocate who is personally invested in these issues. Education is not just a policy matter for me; it is personal. I have taught history and English at Yeshiva Toras Simcha and understand firsthand the importance of ensuring that families can afford quality education. I have also devoted my life to standing up for those who have no voice. In 2015, during the rise of ISIS, I witnessed the atrocities being committed against religious minorities in Iraq and Syria, including the mass slaughter of the Yazidi people in Sinjar. In response, I joined a Kurdish militia in Syria and fought on the front lines against ISIS. Approximately one-quarter of the friends I served alongside were killed protecting their families and defending freedom. My experiences in Syrian Kurdistan were later covered by the Jerusalem Post. After returning from Syria, I encountered Yiddishkeit in a profound way and eventually attended Ohr Somayach Yeshiva. That experience transformed my life. I am deeply grateful for the yeshivos and Torah institutions in Eretz Yisrael that American Jews help sustain through their charitable support. Unfortunately, that support has come under threat. Legislative proposals have been introduced that would restrict nonprofit organizations from sending funds to certain areas of Israel, including parts of Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria. One such proposal was supported by Delegate Steinett. Had it passed, numerous religious institutions, including my own yeshiva, could have been blacklisted and cut off from support. My long-term vision is to break the monopoly that government-run schools currently hold over education in many communities. School choice should not be a privilege reserved for the wealthy. Every parent should have the opportunity to choose a safe, high-quality educational environment that reflects their values and meets their children's needs. In the short term, I will focus on securing Maryland's participation in the Education Freedom Tax Credit. This federal program, signed into law by President Trump, allows states to opt in and dramatically expand scholarship opportunities for students attending private schools. The impact would be significant. Donors who contribute to scholarship organizations in participating states can receive a 100% federal tax credit. As a result, many donors currently have a greater incentive to direct their charitable dollars to schools in states like New York rather than schools in Maryland. This means scholarship funding that could benefit Maryland families is instead flowing elsewhere. By opting into this program, Maryland can attract those resources back into our state and dramatically increase the amount of scholarship assistance available to low-income and middle-income families. I am a fighter. This issue is my mission. I am committed to advancing educational freedom, strengthening our community, and delivering real results for Maryland families. 📲 For fast & reliable hyper-local Jewish Baltimore news: Got a Tip? Maryland Audits Uncover Billions In Questionable Spending Maryland taxpayers continue to face higher taxes and fees while state audits reveal serious concerns about how government money is being managed. Recent audits uncovered more than $1.2 billion in questionable spending, improper payments, and financial irregularities. For example: • About $760 million in unemployment overpayments that the state failed to adequately pursue for recovery. • About $359 million in transportation expenses charged to federally funded projects that auditors questioned. • A failed state procurement system that cost taxpayers about $32.5 million. • Millions in questionable Medicaid payments and oversight failures. 📲 For fast & reliable hyper-local Jewish Baltimore news: Got a Tip? Message to the admin: Teaching Our Children How To Collect Respectfully The following was sent by a Baltimore Scoop follower As someone who grew up in Baltimore, raising money for our schools was a rite of passage. Many of us have fond memories of walking around the neighborhood collecting "boosters" from family, friends, and neighbors. We stood outside places like 7 Mile Market and other local establishments, politely asking for support. It's something that still goes on today, and it brings back a lot of nostalgia. That said, I've noticed a change over the years that I think deserves attention. When we collected, we stood outside. Today, it's becoming increasingly common for boys to stand directly inside store entrances, stopping people as they try to enter and leave. At times, shoppers are effectively blocked from exiting, creating congestion and frustration for everyone. This past Erev Shabbos, I even saw boys walking through the store itself, stopping shoppers to ask for donations. I generally don't mind seeing young boys collecting for schools and tzedakah organizations. It's part of our community culture. But there has to be a line. Standing outside and asking respectfully is one thing. Approaching shoppers inside a store while they're trying to shop is another. Parents and organizers should have conversations with their children about socially appropriate ways to collect, including where and how to approach people respectfully. And, with all due respect, Erev Shabbos is probably not the ideal time to stop people in 7 Mile Market and ask them for money while they're trying to finish their shopping. 📲 For fast & reliable hyper-local Jewish Baltimore news: Got a Tip? Baltimore City Council Approves Homestead Tax Credit Increase; Schleifer Calls It a Tax Hike The Baltimore City Council voted Monday to raise the Homestead Tax Credit cap from 4% to 5%, a move supporters say will help fund a proposed one-cent reduction in the city's property tax rate. Councilman Yitzy Schleifer voted against the measure, arguing that it amounts to a tax increase on homeowners. "This bill is strictly a tax increase," Schleifer said, adding that the city should find the approximately $2 million needed for the proposed tax rate reduction within its nearly $5 billion budget rather than raising taxes on owner-occupied homes. 📲 For fast & reliable hyper-local Jewish Baltimore news: Got a Tip? Aaron Barnett Trespassed From Woodlawn Senior Center Following Friday Incident This past Friday, Baltimore County Council candidate Aaron Barnett was reportedly trespassed from the Woodlawn Senior Center after allegedly running into the polling location and yelling at a voter who had cast a ballot for his opponent, Karson Kamenetz. The incident comes amid a closely watched race for the Baltimore County Council seat between Barnett and Karson Kamenetz. Kamenetz, the son of the late Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz, has received support from many establishment Democrats and community leaders. Barnett has positioned himself as a progressive challenger, and the campaign has become increasingly contentious as Election Day approaches. 📲 For fast & reliable hyper-local Jewish Baltimore news: Got a Tip? Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott is expected to sign a bill on Tuesday that will restrict where smoke shops can operate within city limits. The new law will prevent smoke shops from operating within 750 feet of a school, park, or recreation center. Smoke shops that are already in business within those distances will have two years to close. The legislation was approved by Baltimore's city council during a meeting in May. "I hope to see a lot less of our young people using these products," Baltimore councilmember Zac Blanchard said at the meeting. 📲 For fast & reliable hyper-local Jewish Baltimore news: Got a Tip? Is Dalya Going To Win? Baltimore Scoop has spoken to sources who indicate that Senator Dalya Attar is facing a very close race, with concerns about voter turnout becoming a major factor in the final outcome. What is clear is that early voting turnout has appeared lighter than many expected, based on conversations with people at polling locations. There have also been reports from some voters who were mistakenly given ballots that did not include Dalya Attar's name and were initially told there was little that could be done about getting the ballot for the wrong district. Voters should carefully review their ballots and immediately notify election officials and the Baltimore Scoop as we will not let this slide. What we are not seeing enough of is our own community showing up in strong numbers. If you support Senator Attar, it is absolutely critical that you make your voice heard. Polls are open until 8:00 PM today at the Public Safety Training Center across from the JCC. Share this post with family, friends, neighbors, and community groups. Make sure everyone who plans to vote actually gets out and votes. The outcome will come down to turnout. 📲 For fast & reliable hyper-local Jewish Baltimore news: Got a Tip? Share your Mind! State Elections Administrator Confirms Mail-In Ballot Error Maryland's top elections official, Jared DeMarinis, has confirmed that a coding error by a state vendor resulted in some voters receiving the wrong mail-in ballots ahead of the June 23 primary election. According to DeMarinis, the issue was related to party affiliation coding and led the state to send more than 447,000 replacement ballots. He stated that the problem was caused by a vendor error and that safeguards have been put in place to prevent it from happening again. The acknowledgment comes after widespread concern from voters who reported receiving incorrect ballots. 📲 For fast & reliable hyper-local Jewish Baltimore news: Got a Tip? Share your Mind! Baltimore County Executive Candidates Clash Over Campaign Mailer A dispute is brewing in the Baltimore County Executive race after Councilman Julian Jones accused opponent Councilman Izzy Patoka of using a campaign mailer that he says could mislead voters. Jones claims the mailer featured images of several County Council candidates without their permission, creating the impression of support or endorsement. He also argued the piece portrayed redistricting as a major accomplishment of Patoka's. Patoka pushed back, saying the mailer did not claim any endorsements and was simply intended to illustrate how redistricting helped create a more diverse field of candidates. Meanwhile, fellow candidate Nick Stewart criticized the back-and-forth, saying Baltimore County voters are tired of political infighting and negativity. Stewart pointed to his support for the original redistricting commission map as an effort to keep politics out of the process. 📲 For fast & reliable hyper-local Jewish Baltimore news: Got a Tip? 5:53 PMWatch: The Final Moment of TA's Hadran Aloch: The Siyum and Concert! Hadran Aloch is more than a campaign. Yes, over the past few weeks, parents, ambassadors, staff, grandparents, alumni, and friends came together with extraordinary dedication on behalf of TA. But at the heart of Hadran Aloch is something even deeper: the Torah learning of our talmidim. Throughout the year, and especially over the last several weeks, TA talmidim set goals, learned, reviewed, pushed themselves, and grew. Their Hadran Aloch was not measured in dollars raised, but in Torah learned, chazarah completed, and the pride of genuine accomplishment. On Monday, June 15th, that achievement came together in a beautiful culmination of siyumim, song, and Simchas HaTorah. It was the final moment of this year’s Hadran Aloch — and it captured what this campaign was always about. Enjoy the recap video linked above and share in the nachas! Mazel tov to our talmidim, their rebbeim and teachers, and the entire TA family. May we continue to celebrate many more moments of Torah, growth, and nachas together. Warmly, Rabbi Yaacov Cohen Executive Vice President

1:17 AMWHOA: Dalya Stands up to Crazed Man at Voting Center 🚨 [WARNING: STRONG LANGUAGE - VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED] A viral video circulating tonight shows a man harassing Dalya Attar supporters. While the video itself does not show Dalya, her voice can clearly be heard pushing back and defending her team. Most people would have walked (ran) away. Instead, she stepped up and faced the situation head-on while others around her stood with her. Supporters of Sheriff Sam Cogen who were on the scene also stepped in and helped get the man to leave. 🎯 Baltimore Scoop's Take on the Matter If she's willing to stand up to a crazed lunatic in the street, we believe she'll stand up to the crazed lunatics in Annapolis as well. 📲 For fast & reliable hyper-local Jewish Baltimore news: Got a Tip? People Of The Community: Rabbi Moshe Yaakov Edelman This week we are featuring Rabbi Moshe Yaakov Edelman, a beloved member of the Baltimore community with a remarkable journey spanning Baltimore, South Africa, and beyond. Rabbi Edelman is the Rosh Yeshiva of Gevuras Ari, a unique yeshiva for baalei batim and mechanchim who want to become yeshiva bochurim again, primarily serving retired men seeking renewed growth in Torah learning. In addition, he runs Rebbe’s Mussar Stories, an organization dedicated to promoting Emunah and Middos Tovos for children and their families through meaningful and inspiring stories. Originally from Frederick, Maryland, Rabbi Edelman attended Ner Israel Rabbinical College Mechina High School and has deep roots in Baltimore. Though he left for yeshiva in 1985 and only returned in 2019, many in the community know his family well — especially his parents, Dr. Robert and Marge Edelman, or his firstborn son Shaul. Rabbi Edelman and his wife most recently lived in Johannesburg, South Africa, before choosing Baltimore as home. Torah learning and teaching remain the great joy of his life — a striking contrast to his teenage years as the energetic bochur many still remember from an unforgettable dorm incident in 1981, when he severed his finger in the Ner Israel dorms. Rabbi Edelman shared several life mottos that beautifully reflect his outlook: • Mussar is Geshmak • Yeshiva is not just for youngsters. Aderaba, it is mainly for elders • Live your Yiddishkeit passionately, not by rote • Your wife is the source of blessing in your home (Bava Metzia 59a), so don’t skimp on her! 📲 For fast & reliable hyper-local Jewish Baltimore news: Got a Tip? This location made national headlines in 2022 after becoming the first Apple store in the United States to successfully unionize. The closure has sparked controversy, with union leaders and Maryland officials accusing Apple of targeting the unionized location. We See Who Voted. We Also See Who Didn’t. We just pulled the official voter participation list for Baltimore City. And to be direct - a very large percentage of our community has still not voted. Yes, we can see it. Voting records are public. While no one can see who you voted for, anyone can see whether you voted. That means we know exactly how many people in our community are sitting this election out. This is hard to understand. We constantly hear from people about rising tuition costs, transportation issues, security concerns, and the urgent fight against antisemitism. You cannot sit out and then complain later about the outcome. Election Day is Tuesday. There is still time. We are asking every person reading this to do two things: 1. Make sure you vote. 2. Reach out to 3 people today and ask them if they voted. Let’s make sure our community shows up. Because right now, too many names are still missing. 📲 For fast & reliable hyper-local Jewish Baltimore news: Got a Tip? Share your Mind!
