🥐 TORONTO STAR PROFILES GRODZINSKI OWNER YAAKOV ABOUDI The Toronto Star has profiled Grodzinski Bakery owner Yaakov (Jacob) Aboudi, offering readers a behind-the-scenes look at the hectic pre-Rosh Hashanah rush at the iconic Bathurst-area bakery — and at the man running it. Aboudi, whose background is in banking and finance rather than baking, told the Star that he gets about four hours of sleep a night, waking at 2 a.m. to learn for two hours before heading to the bakery for the 4 a.m. shift change. ✈️ CARNEY WANTS PRIVATE INVESTORS INVOLVED IN OPERATING PEARSON AIRPORT Prime Minister Mark Carney says Ottawa wants to bring private investment into Canada’s four largest airports — including Toronto Pearson, along with Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver. Carney says the federal government would retain majority ownership through the Canada Strong Fund, while private investors could become involved in airport operations. The government says proceeds from private investment would be redirected toward regional airports, transportation and broadband infrastructure. The proposal is now entering consultations and would represent a significant change to the current model, under which major Canadian airports are operated by not-for-profit airport authorities on federally owned land. WHO “OWNS” FORGIVENESS? There is a fundamental machlokes regarding the role that another person’s forgiveness plays in kaparah for an aveirah bein adam lachaveiro. Consider two cases: 1) A person sincerely regrets hurting his friend, resolves never to repeat the wrongdoing, and asks forgiveness three times, as prescribed by Chazal — but his friend still refuses to forgive him. 2) A person has sincere charatah and resolves never to repeat what he did — but despite his efforts, he cannot locate the person he offended and therefore has no opportunity to ask forgiveness. According to the Minchas Chinuch, actual forgiveness is ultimately necessary for complete kaparah — דבחבירו תליא, the matter remains dependent upon the person who was wronged. In both cases, therefore, something remains lacking in his kaparah. (Minchas Chinuch, mitzvah 364) The Pri Chadash, however, understands that the essential requirement is the offender’s obligation of ritzui. If he has genuinely repented and sincerely does everything within his ability to appease the person he hurt, his kaparah does not remain dependent upon something beyond his control. (Pri Chadash, O.C. 606:1) The Pri Chadash points to the precise language of the Mishnah: עד שירצה את חבירו — until he appeases his friend. It does not say עד שיתרצה חבירו — until his friend becomes appeased. (Yoma 85b) In other words, the Minchas Chinuch seemingly understands that the aggrieved party is the baal — the “owner” — of the forgiveness. The Pri Chadash understands that seeking forgiveness is fundamentally part of the offender’s own process of teshuvah. If he could attempt to make amends but chooses not to, that itself demonstrates that his teshuvah is incomplete. This may shed light on a fascinating Gemara. When someone had wronged Rav Zeira, he would deliberately make himself available to that person so that the offender could approach him and seek forgiveness. The Gemara similarly relates that when a butcher who had wronged Rav failed to approach him before Yom Kippur, Rav himself went to facilitate the reconciliation. (Yoma 87a) Why couldn’t these Amora’im simply be mochel the offenders from home? According to the Pri Chadash, perhaps because the offender himself needs to perform the ritzui. Asking forgiveness is not merely the means of obtaining mechilah; it is part of his teshuvah. But that raises a fascinating question in the opposite direction: Every night in Krias Shema she’al hamittah — and again in Tefillah Zakah on Erev Yom Kippur — we declare that we forgive those who have wronged us. According to the Pri Chadash, what does that accomplish? If approaching the person one hurt and seeking forgiveness is itself an essential element of teshuvah, how can our unilateral mechilah help someone who never performed that ritzui? 🎓 “SCHOLARSHIP” THESE DAYS AT U OF T The University of Toronto’s Jackman Humanities Institute is promoting a research working group called “Bridging Theories of Anti-Zionism.” Look at how the project’s description frames its very first question: ▎ “How have the last three years of genocide in Palestine changed the scholarly engagement with this question?” Not “alleged genocide.” Not “what some scholars describe as genocide.” The conclusion is simply built into the premise. Meanwhile, urban-warfare scholar John Spencer, who has repeatedly visited Gaza and studied the IDF’s conduct and targeting procedures, has written extensively arguing precisely the opposite: that Israel’s conduct does not meet the definition of genocide, pointing among other things to its targeting practices, civilian evacuations and other measures intended to reduce civilian harm. One would think that competing expert analyses are precisely what serious scholarship is supposed to examine — not resolve by assumption in the opening sentence. They are members of our community — people who may be sitting just a row away from us in shul. _🎓 “SCHOLARSHIP” THESE DAYS AT U OF T_ The University of Toronto’s Jackman Humanities Institute is promoting a research working group called “Bridging Theories of Anti-Zionism.” Look at how the project’s description frames its very first question: > “How have the last three years of genocide in Palestine changed the scholarly engagement with this question?” Not “alleged genocide.” Not “what some scholars describe as genocide.” The conclusion is simply built into the premise. Meanwhile, urban-warfare scholar John Spencer, who has repeatedly visited Gaza and studied the IDF’s conduct and targeting procedures, has written extensively arguing precisely the opposite: that Israel’s conduct does not meet the definition of genocide, pointing among other things to its targeting practices, civilian evacuations and other measures intended to reduce civilian harm. One would think that competing expert analyses are precisely what serious scholarship is supposed to examine — not resolve by assumption in the opening sentence. 🚨 UPDATE: U OF T REMOVES CONTROVERSIAL ANTI-ZIONISM WEBPAGE Following mounting criticism, the University of Toronto has removed the webpage for the Jackman Humanities Institute’s “Bridging Theories of Anti-Zionism” working group. It remains unclear whether the working group itself has been cancelled or will proceed. The controversy has now reached U of T’s Governing Council, with Governor Dr. David Jacobs saying the matter will be discussed “in excruciating detail” at its next meeting. U of T says the group does not represent an institutional endorsement of its participants’ views. Jackman Humanities Institute director Randy Boyagoda also confirmed that proposals for working groups are assessed by fellow faculty members. The webpage may be gone — but questions about how this proposal passed U of T’s review process remain.

🚨 FORD WALKS BACK APPARENT CHOW ENDORSEMENT — BUT WHAT ELSE DID “READ BETWEEN THE LINES” MEAN? Premier Doug Ford is now insisting he did not endorse Olivia Chow for re-election — despite comments that appeared to send a rather unmistakable message. Asked Wednesday about the Toronto mayoral race, Ford lavished praise on Chow, saying the two have a “phenomenal relationship,” that his government would “continue supporting the mayor,” and that “she’s doing an incredible job.” He then ended by saying, “So, read between the lines.” Ford’s office subsequently issued a categorical denial, saying the premier “did not endorse Olivia Chow and will not endorse any candidate in the Toronto mayoral race.” Ford himself followed up Friday morning, saying, “When I endorse someone, which I’m not, you come out and fully endorse them.” Fair enough: Ford never uttered the words “I endorse Olivia Chow.” But when a politician is asked about an election, praises one of the candidates, and then explicitly tells reporters to “read between the lines,” it is hardly surprising that reporters did exactly that. Ford can draw a distinction between a formal endorsement and what he said Wednesday. But his subsequent clarification leaves an obvious question hanging: If he wasn't signalling support for Chow's re-election, what exactly were reporters supposed to read between the lines?

2,000-YEAR-OLD MIKVEH REVEALS PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN JEWISH COMMUNITY IN ISRAEL A remarkable archaeological discovery in Kiryat Gat has revealed evidence of a Jewish community that researchers didn't previously know existed. Archaeologists uncovered an approximately 2,000-year-old mikveh, together with stone measuring vessels — widely used by Jews during the Second Temple period because stone does not become tamei. The Israel Antiquities Authority says this is the first known Jewish settlement from the period discovered in the area between the Judean Lowlands and northern Negev. Evidence suggests the community was apparently abandoned around the time of the Bar Kochba revolt. And the mikveh itself is enormous: weighing approximately 25 tons and measuring four metres wide, it was painstakingly reinforced and lifted from the earth intact using a 300-ton-capacity crane. After temporarily being stored at the IAA's National Treasures facility, the entire ancient mikveh is expected to be returned to the new Carmei Gat neighborhood and placed on public display. Two thousand years later, a newly built Israeli neighborhood will sit alongside physical evidence of the Jewish community that lived there centuries ago. 🚨 FOUR BUS SHELTERS VANDALIZED ALONG CLARK AVENUE IN THORNHILL York Regional Police are seeking witnesses after four bus shelters were deliberately damaged along Clark Avenue, between Bathurst Street and Atkinson Avenue, early Thursday morning. Police say a lone suspect riding a yellow electric scooter arrived in the area at approximately 12:30 a.m. and damaged the four shelters. Just then, one of the elderly and distinguished Boyaner chassidim walked by and overheard their discussion. This chossid’s only son had abandoned Yiddishkeit in Russia — falling so far that, in Rav Meilech’s telling, he had even become an informer for the Communists. Stopping at the table, he turned to the yungeleit and said: “If my son would knock on my door tonight and cry, ‘Tatte… I want to come home,’ would I stop to think about everything he had done? I would grab him and embrace him. I wouldn’t care where he had been. All that would matter is that my son wants to come home.” Says Rav Meilech: That is teshuvah.
