ALBERTA PROPOSES END TO DEI HIRING IN PUBLIC SECTOR Alberta’s government has introduced legislation that would prohibit public bodies from using diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies in hiring decisions. The proposed rules would cover municipalities, school boards, post-secondary institutions, Crown corporations and public agencies. Mandatory DEI training would also be prohibited unless necessary for the job. Premier Danielle Smith says hiring and promotions should be based on skills, experience and qualifications. Other protections under Alberta’s Human Rights Act would remain in place. Opposition and union critics say employers already hire qualified candidates and argue the government should focus on affordability and health care. The bill has not yet passed. 🚨 OTTAWA URGED TO INVESTIGATE PLANNED TORONTO MASAR BADIL CONFERENCE Jewish advocacy organization Unapologetically Jewish is urging federal authorities to investigate a Masar Badil conference reportedly scheduled for November 28–29 in Toronto, and intervene wherever Canadian law permits. The U.S. Treasury sanctioned Masar Badil in August, identifying it as a front for Samidoun and citing shared leadership and fundraising mechanisms. Canada designated Samidoun as a terrorist entity in October 2024. Writing in Juno News, advocacy group founder Matthew Taub says the conference website praises October 7 as “one of the most courageous acts of resistance in our lifetimes.” Taub says his organization submitted legal briefs to Ottawa requesting security screening of foreign leaders, an investigation into the conference’s financing and organizational connections, and an assessment for Canadian terrorist listing. U.S. sanctions do not automatically make the conference illegal in Canada. Taub acknowledges that his submissions do not establish unlawful financing or confirm that the foreign leaders named plan to attend.

🗳️ ISRAEL ELECTIONS: WHERE THINGS STAND GOING INTO SHABBOS The votes are counted — but there is still no agreement on who will form the next government. The completed count gives: ▪️ Netanyahu’s bloc: 53 seats ▪️ Main opposition bloc: 48 seats ▪️ Arab parties: 19 seats 61 seats are needed for a Knesset majority. Likud remains the largest individual party with 27 seats, but Netanyahu’s bloc is eight seats short. THE CHAREIDI PARTIES United Torah Judaism has 7 seats and Shas 6, giving them a combined 13. Reports suggest UTJ figures are exploring arrangements with the opposition involving the draft and the status of yeshiva bochurim. However, no agreement or formal decision to switch sides has been announced. The Jerusalem Post reports, citing chareidi sources, that Aryeh Deri opposes joining an opposition-led government without Likud. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? The completed count remains subject to final checks. Official results are scheduled to be submitted to President Herzog on Wednesday, November 4, followed by consultations over who should receive the mandate to form a government. The new Knesset is scheduled to be sworn in on November 10. Going into Shabbos: the count is complete, certification is pending, and the coalition deadlock remains unresolved.

🕯️ REMEMBERING MR. JOE “JT” TANENBAUM Z”L This Shabbos marks the yahrtzeit of Mr. Joseph “Joe” Tanenbaum z”l, whose vision and generosity helped build Torah institutions and Jewish communities in Toronto and around the world. Joe’s parents were Avraham and Chippa Sura Tanenbaum. The family came from Parczew, Poland, north of Lublin. His father arrived in Toronto in 1911 and began earning a living collecting scrap metal with a horse and cart. In 1914, he brought his wife and their two young sons, Joseph and Max, to join him. Joe spent his early childhood in Poland and grew up in Toronto, as his father’s modest scrap business developed into Runnymede Iron and Steel, a substantial steel fabrication enterprise. But his lasting legacy would extend far beyond the business world. His philanthropy reached across the Jewish world — from Toronto to Yerushalayim and beyond. Through his support for Torah, chinuch and communal institutions, he helped provide the foundations upon which generations could learn and grow. Here at home, Thornhill bears a particularly enduring imprint of his vision. At a time when its Orthodox community was still taking shape, Mr. Tanenbaum envisioned a shul that would become a spiritual centre for Jewish families. His efforts helped establish Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto — the BAYT — in 1981. Its permanent building was dedicated in 1988. The BAYT became an important anchor for the growing community, bringing families together around Torah, tefillah and communal life. In helping build the shul, JT helped lay the foundations for the flourishing Orthodox Thornhill we know today. His memory also lives on in Kollel Ohr Yosef, established in 2007 and named in his honour. Over nearly two decades, the kollel has brought many new Torahdik families to the GTA, enriching the community through their learning, teaching and involvement in communal life. This year, the kollel dedicated its new building — a significant milestone in its continued growth, and a fitting continuation of JT’s legacy of building Torah for future generations. From an immigrant family’s humble beginnings to a legacy reaching Yerushalayim, Mr. Tanenbaum used his success to help build a future for Klal Yisroel. Yehi zichro boruch.

The warning suggests retaliation could extend beyond Israel and Iran’s immediate surroundings, potentially targeting US bases and American or Israeli interests abroad. “Non-physical assets” could suggest cyberattacks against communications, computer systems or financial networks, though the statement did not define the term. 🚨 BRIDLE PATH HOME INVASION: POLICE IDENTIFY SUSPECT THEY HAD ALREADY ENCOUNTERED IN HOSPITAL Toronto police are searching for Daijohn Richards, 23, following Thursday’s brutal home invasion on Hyde Park Circle, near Bayview and Lawrence. Police say three intruders armed with guns and a hammer broke into a family’s home and demanded valuables. A father and his two adult daughters were shot. The father and his wife were also struck with a hammer. Two victims suffered life-altering injuries. Here is what happened next: ▪️ Police believe another intruder accidentally shot Richards in the right shoulder during the attack. ▪️ Richards went to St. Joseph’s Health Centre for treatment. Hospital staff notified police, and officers attended and interacted with him. ▪️ He was then discharged late Thursday morning. 😲😳🤔 ▪️ Police subsequently linked him to the home invasion. He is now wanted on a Canada-wide warrant and remains at large. Why wasn’t he arrested at the hospital? Insp. Kristy Smith says police had not yet established reasonable grounds connecting him to the home invasion when he was there. That explanation leaves serious questions: ▪️ What did officers know when they spoke with him? ▪️ How quickly did they investigate how and where he had been shot? ▪️ What evidence eventually connected him to the attack—and could it have been obtained sooner? ▪️ Were any opportunities missed before he left hospital? HoRav Hirschman, shlit"a, speaking about Reb Moshe Reichmann last night Rav Hirschman began by speaking about how Reb Moshe’s wealth did not define him; his identity was built around serving Hashem. Rav Hirschman then remarked that Shlomo Hamelech said "Ashir ya'aneh azus" — that a wealthy man naturally has a tendency to become brazen and arrogant. Yet regarding Reb Moshe Reichmann, Rav Hirschman testified, "his middos were exceptional for a poor person." The attached clip is a story that took place following the Canary Warf debacle in which Reb Moshe lost billions of dollars and had to cut back on the amounts of tzedaka that he was able to give.

🗳️ BENNETT BACKS EISENKOT — BUT NO GOVERNMENT DEAL YET Naftali Bennett’s B’Yachad party announced Sunday that it will recommend Gadi Eisenkot to President Herzog to receive the mandate to form Israel’s next government. What does that mean? Bennett wants Eisenkot to get the first opportunity to negotiate a government. It does not mean Eisenkot has secured enough support to take office. The main opposition bloc holds 48 seats — already including Bennett’s 12. A Knesset majority is 61, so Eisenkot still needs partners, outside support or sufficient abstentions to get a government approved. The chareidi parties remain crucial: UTJ has 7 seats and Shas 6, but no agreement with Eisenkot has been announced. The bottom line: Eisenkot’s bid to receive the mandate has strengthened. The deadlock over forming a government remains.

BRIDLE PATH FAMILY SPEAKS OUT AFTER VIOLENT HOME INVASION David Morton, CEO of Toronto’s MAC Group, has spoken publicly after armed intruders attacked him, his wife and their two adult daughters inside their home early Thursday morning. “It is difficult to put into words the trauma of experiencing something so horrific in the one place where everyone should feel safest: their own home,” Morton said in a statement Friday. Police say three family members were shot, while Morton and his wife were also struck with a hammer. Two victims’ injuries were described as life-altering. Morton thanked first responders, hospital staff and everyone who has reached out with support. 🏛️ PROPOSED STUDY OF ATTACKS ON PLACES OF WORSHIP BLOCKED AT HERITAGE COMMITTEE A Conservative proposal to study shootings, arson and vandalism targeting Canada’s places of worship was blocked at the House of Commons Heritage Committee on Thursday. MP Andrew Lawton proposed at least eight meetings examining attacks on synagogues, churches, mosques and other religious institutions, with testimony from ministers, police and faith communities. Liberal chair Lisa Hepfner ruled the motion outside the committee’s mandate, saying it concerned criminal law enforcement and belonged before the Justice or Public Safety committee. Liberal and Bloc MPs upheld her ruling 7–4, with Conservatives opposed. Conservatives challenged that reasoning, arguing that religious institutions—and attacks against them—are directly relevant to Canadian heritage. The proposed Heritage Committee study will therefore not proceed. The vote does not prevent another parliamentary committee from taking up the issue.

✈️ TRAGEDY IN FLORIDA: NINE KILLED IN PRIVATE JET CRASH Nine people were killed Sunday afternoon when a private Learjet 60 crashed in Palm Beach County, Florida. The aircraft was reportedly travelling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas when the tragedy occurred shortly before 1 p.m. 🎙️ FINAL MOMENTS Air traffic control recordings indicate that the pilots reported ice accumulation and moderate turbulence before the aircraft began losing altitude rapidly. The crew issued an emergency Mayday call shortly before the crash. 🚨 EMERGENCY RESPONSE Emergency crews rushed to the scene, while approximately 600 nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the crash as a devastating tragedy. 🔎 INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY Although the pilots reported icing and turbulence, investigators have not yet determined the cause of the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation. The identities of the nine victims have not yet been publicly released.

🕯️ 22 Cheshvan – 100th Yahrtzeit of the Third Belzer Rebbe, zy”a Today marks the 100th yahrtzeit of Harav Yissaschar Dov Rokeach, zy”a (1854–1926), the third Belzer Rebbe, known as the Maharid, one of the towering Torah and Chassidic leaders of prewar European Jewry. Born in Belz, Galicia, he was the son of Harav Yehoshua Rokeach, the second Belzer Rebbe, and grandson of Harav Shalom Rokeach, the Sar Shalom, founder of the Belzer dynasty. Following his father's petirah in 1894, he assumed leadership of Belz Chassidus, a position he held for 32 years. Under his leadership, Belz became one of the great centres of Chassidus in Galicia, attracting thousands who sought his Torah guidance, brachos, and counsel. The Rebbe also stood at the helm of Machzikei Hadas, the organization established by his father to strengthen traditional Yiddishkeit and combat the growing influence of secular movements. One of his important contributions was the establishment of the yoshvim system, through which married and unmarried men were supported financially by local businessmen, enabling them to devote their days entirely to Torah learning in the shtieblach of Belz. The Rebbe was also a staunch defender of traditional Torah education and opposed political Zionism, which he regarded as a threat to traditional Jewish life. During World War I, the Russian invasion brought devastation to Belz, forcing the Rebbe to flee with many of his Chassidim. He found refuge in Hungary, spending time in Ratzfert and later Munkacs. Following the war, he returned to Galicia, residing for a period in Oleszyce before eventually re-establishing his court in Belz in the 1920s. Although he did not personally publish a major sefer, his divrei Torah and teachings were preserved by his Chassidim and subsequently published in collections including Divrei Kadsho and Yechi Reuven. His spiritual instructions were also preserved in a Tzetel Katan. The Rebbe was renowned among his Chassidim for his extraordinary kedushah, devotion to Torah, and sensitivity toward others. Numerous stories of his brachos, guidance, and personal conduct have been passed down through generations. Following his petirah on 22 Cheshvan 5687, he was buried alongside his father in the Jewish cemetery in Belz. He was succeeded by his son, Harav Aharon Rokeach, zy”a, the fourth Belzer Rebbe, who would later survive the Holocaust and rebuild Belz Chassidus in Eretz Yisroel. Another son, Harav Mordechai Rokeach of Bilgoray, zy”a, accompanied his brother during their wartime escape and was the father of the present Belzer Rebbe, Harav Yissaschar Dov Rokeach, shlit”a. 🔥 JEWISH-OWNED MONTREAL BAKERY DESTROYED IN SUSPECTED ARSON ATTACK — SECOND ATTACK IN 48 HOURS A Jewish-owned kosher bakery in Montreal has been devastated by a suspected arson attack, with police investigating whether antisemitism played a role. Mimimelon, located in Montreal's Saint-Laurent borough, was reportedly targeted twice in less than 48 hours. The first incident occurred late Monday night, November 2. A second fire broke out early Wednesday morning, November 4, prompting a response from approximately 60 firefighters. Owner Jennie Volfson described the bakery as a total loss. 🏠 MORE THAN A YEAR AFTER FATAL HOME INVASION, RESIDENT FACES GUN CHARGES Ontario police have announced 12 firearms-related charges against a resident of a South Glengarry home where two suspected intruders were fatally shot during a home invasion. The invasion happened in February 2025. It is making headlines now because the resident was charged on October 29, 2026, and police announced the charges on November 4. Ozric Blanchard, 31, faces alleged firearm possession and storage offences. He has not been charged with homicide. Scoop2Cents: People should be able to protect their homes and families without fearing prosecution for doing so. Police have a duty to investigate, but our laws should give residents facing a terrifying invasion confidence that reasonable acts of protection will be supported. The full circumstances remain unclear, and the charges alone do not establish that Blanchard is being prosecuted for defending himself. Still, the case raises serious questions about how our justice system treats residents whose homes are invaded.
