CBC reports that Israel asked Canada for permission for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plane to cross Canadian airspace on its way to Washington. The Carney government is refusing to say whether it approved the request, repeatedly declining to answer the question directly while insisting Canada remains committed to international law. Meanwhile, with everything else going on in the country, CBC has turned a flight path at 35,000 feet into the latest national controversy. 😅

There Were No Greater Yomim Tovim Than Tu B'Av... The Mishnah famously declares: "לא היו ימים טובים לישראל כחמישה עשר באב וכיום הכיפורים" — "There were no days as festive for Klal Yisroel as the Fifteenth of Av and Yom Kippur." (Ta'anis 4:8) Why is Tu B'Av considered one of the happiest days of the year? The Gemara lists several historic events that occurred on this day, including: • The generation of the Midbar realized that the decree to die in the wilderness had ended. • The tribes were once again permitted to marry one another. • The tribe of Binyamin was welcomed back into Klal Yisroel (following the pilegesh b'givah debacle) • The roadblocks preventing Jews from traveling to Yerushalayim for the regel were removed by Hoshea ben Elah. • The slain of Beitar were finally granted burial after the Bar Kochba revolt. • The annual cutting of wood for the Mizbe'ach was completed. The common thread is one of healing, reconciliation, and renewed closeness to Hashem. Just days after Tishah B'Av, Tu B'Av marks the beginning of rebuilding, hope, and unity. Many also have the custom to view Tu B'Av as an especially auspicious time to daven for a shidduch. While this is not mentioned in Chazal, it is a widespread minhag based on the day's historical association with shidduchim and the Mishnah's description of the daughters of Yerushalayim going out to the vineyards. May we merit to experience the ultimate Tu B'Av with the rebuilding of the Beis Hamikdash במהרה בימינו.

7:03 PMFormer MP Chris Alexander officially enters Toronto’s mayoral race Former Conservative cabinet minister Chris Alexander has officially entered the Toronto mayoral race, setting up a three-way contest with incumbent Mayor Olivia Chow and Councillor Brad Bradford. Alexander, a former MP, cabinet minister, and Canada's ambassador to Afghanistan, says Toronto is "slightly adrift" and needs an outsider to get the city back on track. His priorities include improving transit, increasing housing supply, and boosting economic growth. The announcement quickly sparked political fireworks. Bradford dismissed Alexander as "unfit for this office," accused him of bringing "Trump-style politics" to Canada, and even claimed he had never heard of him before his candidacy. Alexander responded by saying Toronto should be focused on "celebrating each other and coming together," rather than attacking opponents. A new Liaison Strategies poll released today shows Chow leading Bradford among decided voters by 49% to 41%. Alexander was not included in the survey, so his impact on the race remains to be seen. 🗳️ Toronto voters head to the polls on October 26.

🥩 OU Warns of Kosher Meat Shortages After Agri Star Fire Following this week's devastating fire at the OU-certified Agri Star plant in Postville, Iowa, OU Kosher is warning that kosher beef and chicken shortages are likely in the coming weeks, with reduced supermarket availability expected ahead of the Yomim Tovim. Rabbi Moshe Elefant, CEO of OU Kosher, said, "The damaged plant is responsible for a significant portion of kosher beef and chicken shechted and sold in the U.S. The loss is significant enough that we want to alert the tzibbur that they will likely feel the impact in the coming weeks, including reduced supermarket availability." OU says it is working with Agri Star and other OU-certified shechitah plants to increase production and minimize the disruption. Rabbi Elefant also warned that shortages can create opportunities for "unscrupulous individuals looking to profit at the expense of the ehrliche, kosher-observant public," and said mashgichim have been instructed to carefully verify hechsherim, seals, packaging, and approved suppliers before accepting deliveries.

Major Announcement from President Donald J. Trump: "Today, the Board of Peace reached a HISTORIC agreement for the COMPLETE DISARMAMENT of Hamas and all other armed groups in Gaza. This is a monumental step toward lasting PEACE and SECURITY. This agreement is a critical step towards Gaza finally being governed by a new Palestinian government that will work closely with the Board of Peace to help the Palestinian people. At the same time, Israel will have the security it deserves, with Gaza no longer used as a base for terror attacks. This is a major milestone in the implementation of the Trump 20-Point Plan. The agreement will be carried out in carefully structured phases. As disarmament is completed, Israeli forces will withdraw, and the International Stabilization Force will work with a new Palestinian police force to take responsibility for Gaza being safe for its residents and its neighbors. One year ago there was a violent raging war, humanitarian crisis and hostages kept in brutal captivity. We have made historic progress and there is still much work to do. I want to thank the mediators—Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye—for their important efforts, and especially my outstanding team, whose tireless work made this historic breakthrough possible. The threat that emerged from Gaza on October 7 will NOT be allowed to rebuild! Under this agreement, Gaza will finally be in the hands of a new Palestinian government that serves its PEOPLE. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL ON THIS AMAZING DEVELOPMENT, THAT EVERYBODY SAID COULD NEVER BE ACHIEVED!" DONALD J. TRUMP President of the United States of America

🗳️ First Poll Since Chris Alexander Entered the Race shows he's hurting Bradford A new Forum Research poll suggests Chris Alexander's entry into Toronto's mayoral race is drawing support primarily from Brad Bradford rather than Olivia Chow 😟 Three-way race: • Olivia Chow: 47% • Brad Bradford: 32% • Chris Alexander: 11% Without Alexander on the ballot: • Chow: 48% • Bradford: 36% Forum Research says the numbers reinforce a familiar lesson: splitting the anti-Chow vote makes it easier for the incumbent to win 😔 Election Day is October 26.

Trump Gaza Peace Plan: New Roadmap Released The newly established Board of Peace has released a roadmap for implementing President Donald Trump's Gaza peace plan, outlining a phased process that would: • Require the disarmament of Hamas and all other armed groups in Gaza. • Create an independent civilian administration (the National Gaza Administration Committee) to govern the Strip. • Establish a technocratic Palestinian government responsible for civilian administration and security. • Begin a phased IDF withdrawal, tied to verified progress in disarmament. • Deploy an International Stabilization Force to secure aid, separate Israeli and Palestinian forces, and help train a new Palestinian police force. • Launch Gaza's reconstruction under international oversight. The framework also states that no Gazans would be forcibly displaced, and that all heavy weapons, tunnels, military infrastructure, and armed militias would be dismantled. According to the proposal, only the future Palestinian technocratic government would be authorized to possess weapons after the process is complete. The roadmap is intended as the implementation framework for the broader peace agreement announced yesterday. Whether it ultimately succeeds will depend on the parties carrying out these commitments in practice.

🚨 5 Toronto Police Officers Found to Have Committed Misconduct Over Controversial Podcast An independent York Regional Police investigation has substantiated misconduct allegations against five Toronto Police Service officers over the controversial Project Olive Branch podcast. Among those found to have committed misconduct are Const. Farhan Ali and Const. Haroon Siddiqui, the two officers who hosted the podcast in uniform on an official Toronto Police platform. Misconduct was also substantiated against three supervising officers who approved the episode. While the supervisors have not been publicly identified, the investigation concluded that their actions contributed to undermining public confidence in the Service's impartiality. The podcast was launched following the October 7 Hamas terrorist attacks as part of Project Olive Branch, an initiative aimed at strengthening relationships with Toronto's Muslim community. It sparked widespread backlash after one episode included comments linking the attacks to an increase in conversions to Islam. The report concludes that discussing politically sensitive issues in uniform on an official police platform undermined public trust in the Toronto Police Service and the matter will proceed through the police disciplinary process.

A Beautiful Vort from Rav Elimelech Biderman, shlit"a The Gemara teaches that Chazal originally instituted the bracha of "She'asah Li Kol Tzorki" to be recited specifically when putting on one's shoes in the morning (today, we generally recite all of Birchos HaShachar together in shul). Why is this bracha connected to shoes? Rav Elimelech Biderman explains that every other article of clothing can still fulfill its purpose even if it's a little too big or a little too small. Shoes are different. If they don't fit precisely, they're practically useless. The message is profound. When we say "She'asah Li Kol Tzorki"—that Hashem has provided me with all that I need—we should remember that everything He gives us is custom-tailored with perfect precision. Our spiritual opportunities, emotional challenges, material blessings, and even the difficulties we encounter are never random. Nothing is too much, and nothing is too little. Every detail is exactly measured for our unique mission in life. Just as a good pair of shoes must fit perfectly, so too everything Hashem provides is the exact fit for us.

🌪️ TORNADO WARNING ISSUED FOR NIAGARA REGION; LATER LIFTED Environment Canada issued a tornado warning this afternoon for the Niagara Region, including Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Welland, and surrounding communities, after a severe thunderstorm was detected that was possibly producing a tornado. Residents were urged to take immediate shelter as the storm also threatened damaging winds, large hail, and torrential rainfall. The tornado warning has since been lifted, but rainfall warnings remain in effect. Environment Canada says some areas could still receive 50–80 mm of rain, raising the risk of localized flooding, ponding on roads, and poor visibility. Anyone travelling to the Niagara area today should continue to monitor weather conditions and exercise caution.

Police say the suspect, 24-year-old Chad Williams, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities have not yet determined a motive. Investigators say an off-duty Idaho State Police trooper and an armed civilian returned fire, and believe their quick actions helped prevent even greater loss of life. One of those killed was an In-N-Out employee. The restaurant had opened just over a week ago.

The rates were reportedly comparable to or below pre-war Gaza — and lower than those reported in neighbouring countries including Egypt and Jordan. If even the UN — an organization that never misses an opportunity to smear Israel — is admitting that the media got this wrong, then they probably did. Source: UNICEF-coordinated UN nutrition survey

🏥 NATIONAL POST FIRES BACK OVER MOUNT SINAI DOCTOR CONTROVERSY A new National Post column is pushing back hard against Shree Paradker's Toronto Star portrayal of Dr. Kavita Algu, the former Mount Sinai palliative-care physician who resigned after a workplace investigation found her conduct disruptive and unprofessional. Columnist Terry Newman points to Algu’s extensive anti-Israel activism, including: ▪️ Accusing Israel of “genocide” and deliberately targeting Gaza’s health-care system ▪️ Comparing demands that Hamas disarm with demands on Israeli government officials ▪️ Accusing Israel of torturing and starving Gaza’s civilian population ▪️ Serving on the board of Movement Media Hub, an activist organization focused on media and narrative strategy ▪️ Appearing at a Toronto demonstration where she read a message from a prisoner associated with Palestine Action, which is now a proscribed terrorist organization in the U.K. The column argues that this context helps explain why Jewish colleagues at the historically Jewish hospital may have felt uncomfortable — and challenges the Star’s framing of Algu primarily as the victim of an unfair workplace process. “I can’t imagine why Jewish health-care workers would be concerned about working alongside Algu. It’s a complete mystery,” Newman writes sarcastically. Source: Terry Newman, National Post, Aug. 7

לא תתגודדו Remembering What Really Matters ״בנים אתם לה׳ אלוקיכם לא תתגודדו״ “You are children of Hashem your G-d; you shall not cut yourselves.” — Devarim 14:1 The plain meaning of לא תתגודדו is the prohibition against cutting oneself as an expression of excessive grief following the death of a loved one. The Gemara in Yevamos derives an additional prohibition from these words: לא תעשו אגודות אגודות — we should not divide ourselves into separate factions at times when we are meant to be united. The Shem MiShmuel asks: What is the connection between these two seemingly unrelated prohibitions? He explains that excessive mourning reflects a distorted view of the totality of Olam Hazeh. If this world were all that existed, death would indeed represent an absolute and irreparable loss. But a Yid knows that Olam Hazeh is only one part of existence, and that the neshama continues into Olam Haba. The same distortion can lead to אגודות אגודות. So much of the division between people comes from giving exaggerated importance to the concerns of Olam Hazeh — our status, our group, our honour, our differences — while losing sight of what is ultimately eternal. When we remember that we are all בנים אתם לה׳ אלוקיכם, children of the same Father, and that our ultimate purpose lies far beyond the temporary concerns of this world, many of the divisions between us suddenly seem much less important. This, the Shem MiShmuel explains, is why both lessons emerge from the very same pasuk.
