🇺🇸 - New Report Says Fed Knew About SVB Risks A Year Before Collapse A new independent review says Federal Reserve supervisors knew, or should have known, about Silicon Valley Bank’s biggest weaknesses as early as March 2022. They still did not take prompt, decisive action before the bank failed in March 2023. Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman outlined the draft findings Friday. The review was commissioned by Bowman and prepared by Starling Advisory Group. According to the report, SVB failed because of several problems at once. Unrealized losses on its securities portfolio exceeded its capital. About 94 percent of its deposits were uninsured and concentrated in venture-backed tech companies. The bank also was not ready to borrow from the Fed’s discount window when it needed cash. The review says those delays were not caused by the 2018 regulatory tailoring law or by a former Fed vice chair telling staff to ease up. A bigger factor was a culture of risk aversion. Staff believed it was personally safer to do nothing unless they were certain the call was exactly right. The report also rejects the claim that social media triggered the run. An analysis found most of that chatter came after the failure was already inevitable. Bowman said the Fed has already issued new supervisory principles meant to force faster action when a bank’s problems are clear.

🇺🇸 - Flight 93 Hero’s Father Narrates New Ad Against Abdul El-Sayed David Beamer, the father of Flight 93 hero Todd Beamer, narrates a new ad hitting Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed over his campaign ties to streamer Hasan Piker. Todd Beamer was a Flint native. On Sept. 11, 2001, he helped lead passengers who fought back on United Flight 93. His last words, heard by a phone operator, were “Let’s roll.” The plane went down in a Pennsylvania field. Investigators believe the hijackers were headed for the U.S. Capitol. The ad plays Piker saying, “America deserved 9/11, dude. I’m saying it.” It then cuts to El-Sayed being asked if he disavows any of Piker’s views. “I’m not here to disavow people’s views,” El-Sayed said. El-Sayed later called that 9/11 remark a “dumb statement” and said America did not deserve the attacks. He has also said he disagrees with Piker on many things. Piker still campaigned with him during the primary. Beamer, a Michigan resident, has endorsed Republican Mike Rogers in the race for the open U.S. Senate seat.

When controllers tried to switch to the backup system, they found about 600 feet of fiber had been cut between New Brunswick and Newark. Ground stops hit Newark, Teterboro, Philadelphia, LaGuardia, and JFK. Newark took the worst of it, with hundreds of cancellations and more than 100 incoming flights diverted. Some planes coming in from Europe had to turn around. Transportation officials said a construction crew working near the rail line accidentally severed the Verizon cable around 9:45 a.m. Repairs were completed by evening and operations resumed, but delays were expected to linger. His father, Netanel (Nati) Shakron, a father of six from Alei Zahav, was murdered Sunday at Ein Riya spring near Neve Tzuf. He had gone there with Yoav, 16, to immerse ahead of Yom Kippur. After they finished, a terrorist opened fire on their car. Netanel shouted at his son to run. Yoav survived. Netanel was rushed to Beilinson, where he was later pronounced dead. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Meirav Shakron, and their six children: Yoav, Talia, Yael, Tamar, Noa, and Uri. The youngest is four. At the funeral, Yoav said: “Dad, thank you for shouting at me during the attack and telling me to run. 🇨🇦 - Belleville Officer Shot Protecting Synagogue On Yom Kippur Constable Jeff Smith was stationed outside Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville on Sunday night when a gunman opened fire during Kol Nidre. About 25 worshippers were inside. No one in the building was physically hurt. Police say Sean Ward, 29, of Quinte West, allegedly arrived with a shotgun around 7:10 p.m. and fired at Smith, who was parked in an unmarked vehicle at the synagogue’s request. Smith returned fire. A second officer also discharged a weapon. As many as 30 shots were exchanged. Bullets tore through the sanctuary’s stained-glass windows and struck nearby homes and cars. Smith, a 13-year Belleville Police veteran and emergency response officer, is in critical but stable condition in intensive care. The suspect is in life-threatening condition. Synagogue president Norm Weddum said the officer stopped a far worse outcome. “If that officer had not been there, I probably wouldn’t be talking to you right now.” Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre posted Monday: “Constable Jeff Smith put his life on the line to protect worshippers at the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville yesterday, on Yom Kippur. We thank him for his bravery and pray for his swift and full recovery. Jewish families in Canada must be able to worship and live free from terror, violence, or intimidation.” Ontario’s SIU is investigating the officers’ use of force. Belleville police are running a separate criminal investigation. Motive has not been confirmed.
