Detective Jose Mercedes, 33, of the 44th Precinct, was taking items out of his car near Rochambeau Avenue and East 208th Street around 1:45 p.m. on Oct. 2 when two men pulled up on an e-bike, police said. They tried to take a gold chain. He fought back and was stabbed about seven times. The pair fled. Mercedes was taken to Jacobi Hospital and walked out Monday night. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch named the suspects Tuesday as 25-year-old D’Angelo Caraballo and 24-year-old Sneider Mejia. They are wanted on attempted murder, robbery, and criminal possession of a weapon charges. Both are still at large. DHS says both men are Dominican nationals who crossed the border illegally near San Luis, Arizona, and were released into the country under the Biden administration. Fox News, citing DHS sources, reports Mejia was arrested by Border Patrol on Dec. 2, 2022, and later picked up by NYPD on a weapon charge in the Bronx in October 2025. ICE filed a detainer the next day. It was ignored, and he was released. Caraballo was arrested by Border Patrol on Feb. 2, 2023, and has five prior NYC arrests, including a loaded firearm case and a menacing case involving a weapon.
