Maryland Cancels Major Key Bridge Contract, Challenging Moore’s Timeline Annapolis, MD - Apr. 28, 2026 – (FOX45) The Moore administration has canceled a key Phase 2 construction contract with Kiewit Infrastructure Co. for the Francis Scott Key Bridge rebuild after negotiations failed and the contractor’s proposals reportedly far exceeded independent state estimates. The canceled phase included final bridge design, steel pile driving, and major roadway and span construction. The move sends Maryland back into the market for a new contractor at a critical stage of the project and creates a major hurdle for Gov. Wes Moore, who had promoted the rebuild as one of the nation’s fastest-moving large infrastructure projects. Total projected costs have surged from roughly $1.8 billion to more than $5.2 billion. State officials said current Phase 1 work will continue, and an industry forum will be held in May to begin selecting a replacement contractor. Moore has previously said the bridge would be completed by 2028. Read more on BJL: https://www.baltimorejewishlife.com/news/news-detail.php?SECTION_ID=1&ARTICLE_ID=184338 _

An Evening of Emunah and Community at Beth Tfiloh with Jon and Rachel Goldberg-Polin, Parents of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, z'l, H'yd Baltimore, MD - Apr. 28, 2026 – (BJL) On Sunday evening, Beth Tfiloh Congregation hosted Jon and Rachel Goldberg-Polin as the featured speakers for its annual Dahan Lecture, sponsored by the Haron Dahan Foundation. The synagogue’s 1,600-seat sanctuary was filled with people from across the Baltimore Jewish community, representing many congregations and backgrounds, who had come to hear their story and to show respect for a family whose strength and faith have inspired Jews around the world. The program was conducted with the dignity and kavod the moment required. The thoughtful pacing of the evening and the attention to detail created an atmosphere that felt both gracious and appropriate to the significance of the gathering - hallmarks of the thoughtful care for which Beth Tfiloh is widely respected. The full sanctuary was itself a powerful statement: the community showed up. A Warm Moment of Torah and Achdus at The Club Baltimore, MD – Apr. 28, 2026 – (BJL) A beautiful scene unfolded today at The Club when Nesanel Danziger celebrated completing Meseches Succah, which he finished over bein hazmanim, surrounded by four friends. When Yaacov Orlievsky, Star-K mashgiach at The Club, learned of the siyum, he wanted to make sure it was done in the most appropriate way, including reciting the special siyum Kaddish. He went out into the parking lot and found others, bringing them into the eatery to quickly help gather a minyan so Nesanel could make the siyum with a minyan. What followed was a heartwarming kiddush Hashem in broad daylight — with singing and genuine simcha. A simple gathering became a powerful reminder of the beauty of Torah, of the Baltimore community, and the achdus of Klal Yisroel.

Thousands Of Marylanders Downgraded Health Plans on ACA Marketplace Amid Rising Premiums Baltimore, MD – Apr. 29, 2026 - (MM) Maryland health officials reported that approximately 8,000 residents who previously selected gold health insurance plans chose bronze plans for 2026 instead. Bronze plan enrollment increased 13% this year to about 63,400, while gold plan enrollment declined 9% to about 100,800. Silver plan enrollment remained relatively steady at about 70,500. Officials said the shift followed the expiration of federal Enhanced Premium Tax Credits in December and higher monthly premiums. State insurance officials had previously approved an average 13.4% premium rate increase for 2026 plans. Bronze plans continue to cover preventive care, but deductibles can be as high as $10,000, compared with about $1,000 on most gold plans. State officials also said many Marylanders ages 55 to 64 who are not yet eligible for Medicare have been significantly affected by the higher costs. Maryland Gubernatorial Candidate Ed Hale Calls for End to Maryland Vehicle Emissions Program Baltimore, MD – Apr. 29, 2026 – (FOX45) Republican candidate for Maryland Governor Ed Hale said he wants to eliminate the state’s Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP), calling the fees too expensive. At a Monday news conference in Hyattsville, Hale highlighted the fee increase from $14 to $30 last year and said newer vehicles already correct most emissions issues. He said removing the program would provide financial relief to families. The VEIP program has been in place since 1979 and generates more than $50 million for Maryland’s Transportation Trust Fund. Similar bills introduced earlier this year to modify or repeal the program did not advance out of committee. Bais Yaakov Announces Mrs. Shifra Rabenstein as New Assistant Principal Baltimore, MD - April 30, 2026 - The following letter was sent yesterday to the Bais Yaakov parent body: Dear Parents, As the school year draws to a close, we take this opportunity to be thankful for the past and look to the future. We have immense hakaras hatov to Rabbi Yechezkel Zweig for leading our High School for close to four decades and guiding it through this current transition year. His mark on our students and our school cannot be overstated, and we will be forever grateful to him. Our High School is widely recognized as producing the highest quality Bnos Yisroel, and that is very much to his credit. There will, IY"H, be upcoming opportunities for each of us to express our personal hakaras hatov to Rabbi Zweig. We are grateful that Rabbi Zweig has agreed to be available to the High School Administration in an advisory role next year for any needs they may have, as well as continue teaching, so that our talmidos can still enjoy his very popular Parsha classes. May the RBS”O bentch him with many years of gezunt and nachas from his family and the Bais Yaakov Family. We are also looking forward to an exciting future for our High School. Mrs. Mindi Mintz joined us this year and immediately blended right into the fabric of the school. Administrators, teachers, parents, and students continue to be extremely impressed and excited by her warmth, wisdom, and tremendous chinuch and administrative skills. As she takes over the reins of the High School this coming year, we are confident that she will take our High School m’Chayil el Chayil in being mechanech the next generation of Baltimore’s talmidos. As our school continues to grow, B”H, our capable administrative team is working overtime to manage the myriad needs of our ever-growing student body, and would, no doubt, benefit greatly from additional support. Therefore, with the encouragement of our Rabbanim, we are excited to announce the appointment of our very own Mrs. Shifra Rabenstein as our new Assistant Principal. Mrs. Rabenstein will primarily focus on our Limudei Kodesh Department, while also being involved in general school operations. Mrs. Rabenstein is nationally recognized as an outstanding mechaneches, and we in Bais Yaakov are fortunate that we have benefited from her teaching and guiding our students for many years. We are very confident that she will be a tremendous addition to our great administration. May the Ribbono Shel Olam continue to bentch our efforts and may we be zocheh to be mechanech our talmidos b’derech Yisrael Saba, in Yerushalyim Ir Hakodesh Bimhara V’yameinu.

A Surprising Winner of the Rolex Raffle by: Rabbi Shraga Freedman Baltimore, MD - Apr. 30, 2026 – (BJL) Kehilas Bnei Yeshiva of Baltimore (Rabbi Akiva Meister), recently became a partner with Kollel Zichron Eliyahu, embracing the Adopt-A-Kollel vision of connecting a kehila to support a kollel in Eretz Yisroel. The relationship was marked by deep respect and genuine connection. Rabbi Yeshaya Stroh the Rosh Kollel would visit and deliver shiurim, and the kehila took great pride in their role as partners in the kollel’s mission. A few weeks ago, the shul ran a fundraising raffle of 360 tickets, each with a randomly assigned value between $1 and $360. The prize was a Rolex watch or its $16,000 cash equivalent. Wanting to show appreciation to his partners, Rabbi Stroh purchased a ticket, deciding in advance that if the amount was high, he would ask the kollel to cover the cost as part of its hakaras hatov to its supporters, something that can be part of normal kollel expenses. The ticket turned out to be $326. Though it was more than he had hoped to pay personally, he committed to having the kollel cover it. When the raffle was drawn, the winning ticket belonged to Rabbi Stroh himself! The excitement in the kehila was palpable! This was not just a personal win. The community felt that their rosh kollel, their partner, had won. Rabbi Stroh, however, faced a question. Rabbi Duvi Rubin Delivers An Inspirational Message To Yeshivas Toras Simcha Students Baltimore, MD - Apr. 30, 2026 – (BJL) Rabbi Duvi Rubin, Rav of Baltimore's Kehillas Ohr Yisrael, addressed the middle school talmidim of Yeshivas Toras Simcha today, sharing a timely message as we approach Shavuos. He asked the boys to reflect on why Rabbi Akiva’s talmidim passed away during this period, suggesting that these days leading up to Matan Torah highlight the teaching of Chazal, “ derech eretz kadma laTorah .” Rabbi Rubin encouraged the talmidim to strengthen their respect and sensitivity toward one another, emphasizing that even small acts—such as holding the door open for a friend—demonstrate humility and kindness. These everyday moments of proper conduct help prepare us to receive the Torah in the most meaningful way.

It's Happening: Construction Officially Underway at Miriam's Library Baltimore, MD - Apr. 30, 2026 - (BJL) Baltimore isn't waiting around, and neither is Miriam's Library. What started as a vision is now steel, concrete, and real momentum. Construction is officially underway at Miriam's Library and Learning Center, the 14,000-square-foot educational hub at 201 Milford Mill, built in memory of Mrs. Miriam Mintz, a"h, the beloved special education teacher whose decade at the Talmudical Academy of Baltimore left an imprint on hundreds of children and families across the city. Following the closing on the building this past Chanukah, work began almost immediately. While the full second floor, all 7,000 square feet, is being prepared for buildout as existing tenants transition out, a vacant space in the building was identified, and crews moved in right away. "Because children shouldn't have to wait," Mendel Mintz shared. The 1,400-square-foot pilot space is scheduled to open this summer. At the heart of the pilot space is a robust afterschool program designed to give Baltimore's children a place to land when the school day ends. Somewhere to get help with homework, work through challenging material with one-on-one support, recharge, and grow. The afterschool zone is being built with that in mind: open, welcoming, and structured to meet kids where they are. Surrounding it, the plans call for digital learning areas, private study rooms, quiet reading nooks, and a reading lounge bathed in natural light, with comfortable seating and shelves filled with possibility. For the Baltimore community, the milestone is the result of months of collective effort, and the realization of a vision first announced at Miriam's tribute event last summer, where the campaign was publicly launched. Since then, more than $2.3 million has been raised toward the project, carrying it from announcement to closing to active construction in under a year. Construction now marks the moment that vision becomes brick and mortar. "This is only the beginning," Mintz said. "In the coming weeks, we'll be sharing real photos from inside as the space takes shape, B'ezras Hashem."

Agudath Israel of America Welcomes $300 Million for Nonprofit Security Grant Program, Calls for Increased Funding Amid Rising Antisemitism New York, N.Y. - May 1, 2026 – (BJL) Agudath Israel of America welcomes the inclusion of $300 million in funding for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP) in a bill signed yesterday by President Trump. However, in light of the rise in antisemitism, the appropriation falls short of adequately addressing the security needs of vulnerable nonprofit institutions. NSGP is a federal program that assists nonprofits at high risk of terrorist attack to fund target hardening and personnel to help secure their facilities. The program has been utilized, and is in particularly high demand, by institutions in the Jewish community, including synagogues, religious schools, and charitable institutions. Agudath Israel was among the groups at the forefront of NSGP’s creation and has actively promoted its annual funding. "Agudath Israel of America appreciates that the Nonprofit Security Grant Program was included in the DHS funding bill by Congress and even provided a slight increase, but at a time when antisemitism is surging, the security of Jewish institutions needs to be a top priority. The fact that a majority of grant applicants are turned away due to lack of funds is very concerning.” explained Rabbi A.D. Motzen, national director of government affairs for Agudath Israel. “We remain committed to working with our allies to secure more robust funding that meets the scale of the threat facing Jewish communities and other at-risk nonprofits nationwide.” Image generated using OpenAI’s DALL·E

Spirit Airlines Faces Liquidation as Federal Rescue Deal Collapses New York, NY – May 1, 2026 – (The Guardian) Spirit Airlines is on the verge of liquidation after the collapse of a $500 million federal rescue deal designed to save the struggling carrier. Despite efforts from the administration to protect nearly 10,000 jobs, the deal stalled as bondholders and government negotiators reached an impasse over loan terms and equity stakes. This failure marks a terminal point for the airline, which has been operating under its second bankruptcy protection in two years. The airline's downfall was accelerated by a spike in jet fuel prices tied to the ongoing conflict in Iran, which devastated its ultra-low-cost business model. As Spirit prepares for a potential nationwide ground stop and a total wind-down of operations, competitors are already positioning themselves to acquire the carrier's valuable airport slots. Industry experts warn that Spirit’s exit will likely reduce competition and drive up airfares for budget travelers across the country. Launch of Brand-New Community Initiative To Provide Guidance and Assistance with Government Programs: Baltimore, MD – May 4, 2026 – (BJL) BCRN, the Baltimore Community Resource Network, is a new community initiative created to help Baltimore households with the often confusing process of accessing government benefits and community assistance. Whether someone is unsure of the benefits for which they may qualify, struggling to complete complicated forms, or stuck in the middle of an application with no clear next step, BCRN offers practical guidance, hands-on support, and advocacy to help individuals move forward with confidence. As a shared project of the Ahavas Yisrael Charity Fund and Agudah of Maryland, BCRN aims to make essential resources more accessible by helping community members understand their options and navigate the bureaucracy that can too often stand in the way of needed assistance. Ohel Torah serves as the official MDY (Mercaz Daf Yomi) satellite location for Baltimore, providing a dedicated space for those in the community to learn together. This event marked the satellite location’s second successful Siyum. Looking ahead, the group is already planning for the next Masechta, Chullin. BREAKING: Baltimore's Agudah Scrip Program Closing Down Baltimore, MD – May 4, 2026 (BJL) — After decades as a community staple, the Baltimore Agudah Scrip program has officially concluded. The Legacy of Agudah Scrip The program allowed community members to purchase scrip - assorted color notes used as communal currency -for tzedakah in lieu of cash or checks. When families purchased scrip, a percentage was retained as a donation, directly benefiting participating local mosdos. Collectors would then redeem the scrip notes through the Agudah office for their cash value What This Means for the Community With the program now discontinued, residents and organizations must adjust: Donors: Physical Agudah scrip is no longer available for purchase. Collectors : Those who have accepted scrip can redeem it through the Agudah office until Oct. 1st Schools: Institutions relying on this steady fundraising stream will likely introduce new initiatives to fill the gap. While we shift back to dollars and debit cards, the legacy of this communal effort continues - and all existing scrip will remain a valid form of giving, and be eligible for redemption by the collector, through October 1, 2026.

Agudath Israel of America Statement in Support of President Trump's “Shabbos 250” Initiative New York, NY - May 5, 2026 – (BJL) Earlier today President Donald Trump issued a proclamation in honor of Jewish American Heritage Month and included a call to Jewish Americans to observe a “national Sabbath” as part of the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of America. The President specifically pointed to the Shabbos of Parshas Bamidbar (May 15-16) as a day to strengthen Sabbath observance and express gratitude for our great Nation. Agudath Israel supports this initiative, which is referred to in some circles as “Shabbos 250.” We encourage our constituents to use the occasion of Shabbos 250 to reflect on the historic role America has played over the years in serving as a haven of religious freedom. Indeed, the basic obligation of hakaras hatov, recognizing and appreciating the incredible good of our host nation, is a fundamental principle worthy of public acknowledgement. “Shabbos 250 is an opportunity to celebrate the religious liberty we enjoy in this great country and to reflect on the gratitude owed to the United States by each and every one of us,” said Rabbi A.D. Motzen, Agudath Israel of America’s national director of government affairs. “We thank President Trump for recognizing the important role of the Jewish People and Shabbos in the history of the United States.”

DEADLINE ALERT: BOOST Scholarship Applications Close This Friday; 529 Match in a Few Weeks Baltimore, MD - May 5, 2026 – (BJL) Parents are urged to take immediate action as two major financial deadlines approach this month. 1. BOOST Scholarship Program: Deadline May 8 The application period for the BOOST Scholarship Program officially closes this Friday, May 8, at 11:59 PM EDT. Administrative leaders have noted that a significant number of families currently receiving BOOST funding have yet to submit their applications for the upcoming year. If your family currently benefits from this program, you must re-apply by Friday to ensure your scholarship remains active. Pro-Tips for Parents: • Apply even if you were previously denied: Funding availability fluctuates; even if you did not receive an award last year, it is highly recommended to spend the ten minutes required to apply this year. • Direct Link: Families can access the BOOST application portal here: https://www.marylandpublicschools.org/Pages/boost/index.aspx • BOOST/529 Info Sheet: https://agudathisrael-md.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/BOOST-and-529-BOOST-Reminder-2026.pdf 2. Maryland 529 State Contribution: Deadline May 31 In addition to the BOOST deadline, families are reminded that the window to apply for the Maryland 529 State Contribution (MD Match) is also closing soon. To be eligible for the state match on your 529 tuition savings, applications must be submitted by May 31. These programs provide essential support for our community's families, but they are strictly deadline-dependent. Please review the available information and submit your materials as soon as possible to avoid losing out on these opportunities for the next school year. ----------------------------------------
