Ocean County is designated by the CDC as a high-incidence county for Lyme disease, with approximately 85 reported cases per 100,000 residents annually. But according to TickZone – who provided this information to TLS – the risk can look very different from one Ocean County town to the next. For Lakewood residents, the town’s peak-season tick risk is rated 61 out of 100, placing it in the Moderate category. E-Bike Injuries Surging Among Children And Teens In Southern California E-bike injuries among children and teenagers are rising sharply, as the increasingly popular bikes can reach high speeds and crashes can result in serious head injuries, broken bones and other trauma. Children’s Hospital Los Angeles reportedly treated just 8 children and teens for e-bike injuries in 2023, rising to 16 in 2024 and 36 in 2025. In just the first five months of 2026, another 21 young patients had already been treated — putting this year on pace to climb even higher. LA SCOOP’S TAKE ON THE MATTER: I can’t stress enough how dangerous e-bikes can be. My own son was hit by a car while riding one and broke his arm. We are extremely thankful it wasn’t more serious. These machines can be dangerous, especially in the hands of children and teenagers. As parents, we need to understand the risks before handing our kids the keys to an e-bike. Sometimes it only takes a split second for everything to change.
