Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Department of Buildings announced new rules aimed at getting sidewalk sheds removed faster, including 90-day permit renewals requiring owners to show repair progress and escalating penalties for sheds left up without active work. The city is also proposing six new shed designs intended to provide more light, visibility and sidewalk space. The MTA is stepping up flood protections across New York City’s subway system after recent heavy rain sent water pouring into stations and disrupted commutes. Transit officials said crews are positioning flood-fighting equipment throughout the system ahead of storms, while pumps are used to quickly remove water that gets inside.
