For decades, Tiferet Israel Congregation has been a cherished home for Toronto's Moroccan Jewish community, preserving its rich Sephardic heritage, traditions and beautiful tefillos.
Founded by Moroccan Jewish immigrants, the congregation's current building dates back to 1986 — 40 years ago!
Today, the building is in urgent need of repairs, maintenance and renewal. Many of the original founding members are now seniors and pensioners, and a dedicated group of community members has stepped forward with an ambitious mission:
Restore this beloved shul, preserve its Moroccan-Sephardic heritage, and transform it into a warm, vibrant home for the next generation of Jewish families.
With the guidance of Rabbi Shmuel Pinto, the beautiful tefillos led by Hazzan Meyer Elbaz, the Torah reading of Hazzan Aviv Ouanounou, and wonderful weekly Shabbos kiddushim, Tiferet Israel already offers a welcoming atmosphere and a strong sense of community.
Now, the goal is to restore the building to reflect the beauty, warmth and spirit found within its walls.
