Maryland approves purchase of new $109 million voting system Maryland is purchasing a new voting system from Election Systems & Software (ES&S), for up to $109 million. The new system is intended to be ready in time for the 2028 Presidential election. Maryland's current voting equipment is aging, and replacement machines will no longer be available for purchase. Baltimore County Police expands drone use, deploys drone docks The Baltimore County Police is expanding its "Drones as First Responder" program, installing drone docking stations on Tuesday. The drones are used to give officers an ariel view of the scene before arriving at a call, and are already in use in the Towson area.

Six Weeks After Pikesville MTA Bus Crash, Victims Say They’re Still Waiting for Answers More than six weeks after an out-of-control MTA bus barreled down Reisterstown Road and crashed into vehicles and property near Old Court Road, some Pikesville residents and business owners say they are frustrated by the slow pace of the claims process. The July 8 crash sent more than 30 people to hospitals and caused extensive damage along the busy Pikesville corridor. Eric Taylor, whose truck was struck while he was stopped at the intersection, told WJZ that his vehicle remains in an impound lot and has yet to be repaired. “Just fix my vehicle. Give me my vehicle back,” Taylor said, explaining that he relies on the truck to get to work. Nearby business owner Neha Gupta is also waiting for damage to her salon’s sign to be addressed. Surveillance video captured the MTA bus smashing into the sign. Adding to their frustration is a recent letter from the MTA stating that the agency is “still reviewing what happened”

Baltimore County Officer Shot In Pikesville Released From Rehab After Two-Month Recovery Some encouraging news tonight: Baltimore County Police Officer P. Catalfamo, who was critically injured after being shot while responding to a call in the Pikesville area on June 7, has been released from the University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute. Officer Catalfamo spent approximately two months undergoing treatment and rehabilitation after initially being treated at Shock Trauma. Police say Catalfamo and two other officers were responding to reports of a man exposing himself near the Gwynn Falls Trail and Milford Mill Road when the suspect allegedly fled and then opened fire, striking Catalfamo. A series of gunfire exchanges followed involving additional responding officers. Catalfamo was critically injured and rushed to Shock Trauma. Baltimore County Police praised his determination throughout the difficult recovery.

Rendered beef fat forced closure of two I-70 lanes Two lanes were closed earlier today on I-70 in Howard County following a tractor-trailer crash. As a result of the crash, a mystery substance spilled over the highway, causing two lanes to be closed. Officials originally thought the substance was sugar, but MDOT later reported it was rendered beef fat that forced the lane closure.

Sidewalk debate continues on Lightfoot Drive Debate is continuing over proposed sidewalks on Lightfoot Dr in Pikesville. The sidewalks would run along about half a mile of Lightfoot Dr, between Old Court Rd and Carla Rd, near Beth Tfiloh and Pikesville Jewish Congregation. WATCH HIM RUN: Hammer-Carrying Individual Checking Cars Flees After Being Spotted by Fallstaff Safety Initiative A caller alerted the Fallstaff Safety Initiative hotline after spotting an individual allegedly checking vehicles while carrying a hammer. The initiative immediately dispatched a security officer, who located the individual and gave chase toward Seven Mile before losing sight of him. Police were later called and ultimately located the individual, confiscating the hammer. He reportedly told officers he was simply searching for a lost pack of cigarettes and was ultimately released.

Baltimore County Data Center Study Includes Proposed Greenwood Road Location The Baltimore County Planning Board recently completed a study examining data centers and potential areas where they could be permitted within the county. Among the recommendations is an area along Greenwood Road between Sudbrook Lane and Old Court Road, near the Sudbrook Park, Ralston, Church Lane, and Gwynnvale neighborhoods. A public hearing on the recommendations is scheduled for September 3, providing residents an opportunity to learn more and submit comments on the proposal.

BREAKING: Baltimore Police Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting Downtown Baltimore Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Saturday night in the 300 block of N. Eutaw Street in downtown Baltimore. Police confirmed the shooting occurred at approximately 9:32 p.m. Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley and a public information officer are responding to the scene. Details surrounding what led to the shooting, including whether anyone was injured, have not yet been released. This is a developing story.

Baltimore Shomrim Issues Alert After Hyundai Tucson Stolen Sunday Morning Baltimore Shomrim is asking the public to be on the lookout for a brown 2017 Hyundai Tucson stolen Sunday morning from the 3400 block of Pinkney Road. The vehicle, bearing New Jersey tag J75CTA, was reported stolen on August 23, 2026, sometime between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. Certain Hyundai vehicles from roughly 2011–2021 became widely known for a theft vulnerability involving models with traditional key ignitions that lacked an engine immobilizer. However, a 2017 model year alone does not establish that this particular Tucson had that vulnerability, and it is not currently clear how this vehicle was stolen. Anyone who sees the vehicle should not approach it and should contact 911 and Baltimore Shomrim at 410-358-9999.

Baltimore City may close 103 yr. old Warren Rd. bridge Baltimore City may close the 103 year old Warren Rd. Bridge in Cockeysville, amid a funding dispute with Baltimore County. The bridge has sparked safety concerns, with heavy rusting and dangling steel visible. The bridge is owned and maintained by Baltimore City, but is located in Baltimore County. There is no current plan for a replacement bridge, with the City arguing it should not spend limited funds on a bridge that city residents don't use. Meanwhile, thousands of outraged County residents use the bridge daily, including many school buses.

UPDATE: Baltimore Officer Dragged by Vehicle Before Shooting Driver Downtown New details have been released about the officer-involved shooting Saturday night in the 300 block of N. Eutaw Street, near Lexington Market. According to Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley, officers had cited a vehicle for suspended and expired tags and were waiting for it to be towed when a 29-year-old man arrived. Police say he initially denied owning the vehicle before later saying it was his. An officer reportedly allowed the man to retrieve his belongings from the car. Police say the man then got into the driver's seat and attempted to drive away, striking and dragging an officer a short distance. The officer then fired at least three rounds into the vehicle, striking the driver. The 29-year-old was transported to the hospital in critical condition. The officer suffered back and neck injuries and was also hospitalized.

MTA continues to slow-walk claims from massive bus crash Local businesses damaged by the massive MTA bus crash at the intersection of Reisterstown Rd and Old Court Rd are still waiting for their claims to be handled, over a month later after the crash. The agency sent one local business a letter stating “We are still reviewing what happened and have not yet decided whether the MTA is responsible.” A spokesperson for the MTA responded to an inquiry about another unpaid claim, saying: "We are unable to comment in response to your inquiry because it concerns pending claims/litigation. We will share the information you have provided with our claims unit."

Maryland announces 20-year, $470 million solar power agreement Maryland announced last week it has agreed to a 20-year, $470 million agreement to purchase solar power from REV Renewables. The deal will provide the state with 250,000 megawatt-hours of energy from the Jade Meadow III Solar Project, located at the site of a former coal mine in western Maryland. According to Gov. Moore, the deal could end up saving Maryland $300 million over the next 20 years.

Neighborhood Security Increased by Fallstaff Safety Initiative Following Recent Incidents Following several recent security incidents in the neighborhood, including two attempted home break-ins and three attempted vehicle thefts, additional security measures are being put into place. Two additional armed, licensed, bonded, and insured security officers from Mipa Security have been retained to strengthen overnight patrols. Sidewalk Debate Grows in Pikesville as Baltimore County Moves Forward With Lightfoot Drive Plans A debate is growing among Pikesville residents over Baltimore County's proposal to install new sidewalks along Lightfoot Drive between Carla Road and Old Court Road. According to WMAR-2 News, the county is planning approximately half a mile of 5-foot-wide sidewalks on both sides of Lightfoot Drive as part of a broader effort to improve pedestrian safety and walkability in Pikesville. Some homeowners are opposing the project, raising concerns about changes to the neighborhood's appearance, loss of lawn space, and the responsibility of maintaining sidewalks during snow and ice. Others support the sidewalks, arguing they would provide a safer route for children, families, and pedestrians walking to nearby schools, shuls and other community destinations. A county survey of 53 residents found 47% supported the project, 37% opposed it and 15% were undecided.

Maryland Police logged 1.1 billion license plate reads last year from Flock cameras With the debate about Flock cameras growing nationwide, a new analysis of Maryland reports found over 1.1 billion license plate reads in 2025 from law enforcement agencies in Maryland using Flock cameras. Over 3 million license plate reads are conducted daily in Maryland (the same vehicle can be tracked multiple times). Since his marriage, he has been a member of the Ner Yisroel Kollel. Rabbi Kraut is married to Maya (Grove) Kraut, a Baltimore native, and together they are building their home in the Baltimore community. The downgrade comes as Baltimore prepares to ask voters this fall to authorize another $280 million in borrowing for schools, roads, housing and other infrastructure projects. Maryland Awards $10 Million to Protect Communities From Hate Crimes Gov. Wes Moore’s administration has announced $10 million in funding to help protect vulnerable communities across Maryland from hate crimes. The FY27 Protection Against Hate Crimes grants will go to more than 100 nonprofit organizations, houses of worship and community centers across 16 counties and Baltimore City. The funding can be used for armed security, surveillance cameras, access control systems, reinforced doors and windows, emergency communication systems and security training. Among the recipients is Beth El Congregation of Baltimore. Dana Saroken said the funding will allow the congregation to make important security improvements to protect congregants, students, staff and the thousands of people who use its campus. The program comes amid a significant rise in reported hate crimes in Maryland, which increased from 89 in 2021 to 265 in 2023, according to federal data.

When Aviva and I arrived in Baltimore over 23 years ago, we were a young, growing family, and the Shul was navigating the loss of Rabbi Ervin Preis zt’l who led this Kehilla for twenty-five beautiful years. Since that fateful day in August, over two decades ago, we have built something beautiful together. Together we have built more than just a Shul, more than just a Kehilla, we have built a family. And what a beautiful family it is. We are a family of diverse backgrounds and life circumstances. We are a family who learns, davens, and grows together. We are a family who leans on each other in times of difficulty and rejoices and dances with one another in times of simcha. I have had the distinct zechus of being with so many of you in times of immense joy and immense pain. All we have experienced; we have done so together. We have built a beautiful physical building and have created magnificent spiritual edifices together. It has been the greatest privilege of my life, of our lives, to be part of this close-knit and connected family and contribute in some small way to its growth, vitality, and holiness. The Ribbono Shel Olam has a plan for each of us, and this plan often leads us down paths we did not contemplate or anticipate. I have been offered the position of Executive Vice President of the Orthodox Union (OU). The OU is one of the most influential and important organizations in the Jewish world and has an impact in almost all aspects and facets of Jewish life. With all of its departments and initiatives, the OU has a singular mission of enhancing the fabric and holiness of Jewish life. This position is an opportunity to contribute and serve the Jewish people in an amplified capacity. Rabbi Hauer zt’l served in this role until his passing less than a year ago. Rabbi Hauer zt’l meant so much to so many people and I would never even try to fill his shoes, but I can try to perpetuate the mission and continue the journey. My beloved Kehilla, please know that accepting this position at the OU has been the hardest decision of my life. I genuinely love and care for each of you as if you were members of my immediate family; because over 23 years, you have become members of my immediate family. I am plagued by feelings of guilt and in many respects feel like I am letting my Kehilla down. But something in my neshoma tells me that I have to try to give more, be more and do more. This Shul and all of you mean the world to me, and I am committed to maintaining our relationship and connection. I will be starting at the OU on November 2nd. We will IYH immediately commence a search for a full-time Rabbi. As the search process progresses, we will remain in Baltimore, IYH davening at the Shul, delivering Daf Yomi (and other shiurim) and IYH speaking and teaching on Shabbos and Yom Tov (all schedule permitting). I hope to create and maintain a place within our Kehilla which allows a new Rabbi to flourish and lead and allows me to maintain a meaningful and ongoing connection. $11 million in funding announced for new hybrid ferries for the Baltimore Harbor Connector $10,935,000 in federal funding was announced today for Baltimore’s Harbor Connector. The funds will be used to purchase new hybrid ferries, with deck heights that match the landings’ freeboard, so riders with wheelchairs and mobility devices can access the boats more easily. The Harbor Connector is a free ferry service connecting different neighborhoods surrounding the Baltimore Harbor. Around 350,000 passengers used the connector in the most recent fiscal year. The federal funding comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Electric or Low-Emitting Ferry Pilot Program, which was created and funded at $250 million, as a part of the broader Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act in 2021.
