I’ve lived my whole life within the Fallstaff, Labyrinth, and Westbrook area, and every single day the one-way street on Labyrinth feels like a constant frustration. Coming home should be simple, yet I’m forced to drive the long way around, wasting time, gas, and patience, while the road right in front of me remains inaccessible in the direction I need. As someone who walks these blocks, watches the traffic patterns, and hears the same frustration from neighbors, it’s hard not to feel let down. I keep hoping our community leaders will recognize how much of a difference this small change could make, and each day that nothing changes, that disappointment grows. It feels like a quiet disregard for the people who actually live here. We’re not asking for anything unreasonable, just the ability to move freely in our own neighborhood. If opened, Labyrinth would likely become a much busier cut-through, allowing traffic to flow directly from Smith Avenue to Western Run Drive. While some drivers already ignore the one-way, it is still far less congested than it would be if officially opened. On a daily basis, I see cars speeding the wrong way to get through quickly, and frequent honking when two vehicles try to pass each other. It creates a dangerous situation. This comes at a particularly difficult time for many in the community, just hours before a 3-day Yom Tov, when homes are preparing for Pesach and rely heavily on electricity. He also pointed to a previously discussed plan to lower the property tax rate to 1.99%, noting that $4 million had reportedly been set aside toward that effort. However, Schleifer says that plan relied on generating over $4 million in new taxes from thousands of owner-occupied households, effectively shifting the burden onto longtime residents, including seniors. Schleifer credited the City Council with blocking that proposal, saying it protected homeowners from a potential tax increase. He is now calling on the Administration to move forward with at least partial tax relief, suggesting a smaller reduction in the tax rate that would provide savings to homeowners without raising taxes elsewhere. “That’s achievable. My name is Shira Malka Katz and I have been a mental health therapist for the past 7 years. I recently started my own practice, Embers Counseling. I specialize in trauma, depression, and navigating life’s challenges and I use EMDR, inner child work and expressive therapies in my practice. I grew up in Baltimore and have never left! I have taught in many local schools and volunteer as a Madricha at JTAP. I am currently teaching Introduction to Counseling at WITS. I love being able to teach what I am so passionate about and to help students apply psychology to their own lives. I enjoy being creative and using various expressive therapies to help people understand themselves better. It is powerful to be part of someone’s healing and growth journey and to be able to help them get to the root of what they’re struggling with so they can live more fully. Something people are surprised to hear is that even though I talk to people all day for my job, I hate making small talk in social settings! I never know what to talk about! I’m more interested in people’s deepest hopes and insecurities than the weather and Jewish geography! Take the time to understand yourself and heal old wounds and unhealthy patterns. The more you do that, the more you’re able to support yourself instead of needing something outside of you to feel okay. Something I try to live by and impart to my clients is to take things slowing, day by day, after all “we are human beings, not human doings!” Life is busy and if you get swept up in it you can miss out on being present and enjoying life. Self-worth is not based on how much you do and accomplish. I try to practice what I preach and do self-care often. One of my favorite things to do is to sit in a garden and relax. Passing Earle S. “Jock” Freedman He began his career in 1950 at just 20 years old and went on to become one of the most respected bridge engineers in the state and the nation. Over the course of more than six decades with the Maryland State Highway Administration, he helped design, maintain, and oversee more than 2,500 bridges, earning recognition as Maryland’s longest-serving state employee. Jock was perhaps best known professionally for overseeing the design and construction of the Naval Academy Bridge spanning the Severn River in Annapolis, a project that reflected both his engineering excellence and his belief that bridges should serve not only a practical purpose, but also contribute beauty to the landscape around them. His work left a visible and lasting imprint on the state he loved. In recognition of that impact, Maryland honored him in 2004 by naming a bridge carrying Reisterstown Road over the Beltway in his honor.
