2:33 PMThe Forks Were Facing the Wrong Way ““The forks and spoons are facing the wrong way,” the doctor said, stopping me in the middle of the buffet setup. I was certifying a multi-day event, the kind of long weekend where the buffet is its own affair. The setup looked standard: plates first, then forks, knives, and spoons standing upright in their holders, followed by the food. His concern was simple but unsettling. As people reached in, their hands brushed against the tops of multiple utensils, the part that would go into someone else’s mouth. If the utensils were flipped, people would touch only the handles. As it stood, he argued, this was a violation of venishmartem, the Torah obligation to guard one’s health and safety, and something the kashrus agency had to address. He wanted me to shut down the buffet.” Rabbi Sholem Fishbane, cRc Kashrus Administrator, was featured in Mishpacha Magazine Family Table.
