Orthodox Union Urges SCOTUS To Protect the Right To Pray At Home – Without Government Harassment The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America (“Orthodox Union”)—the nation’s largest Orthodox Jewish umbrella organization—filed a friend-of-the-court brief in Daniel Grand v. City of University Heights, Ohio, a case addressing whether local governments can use land-use regulations to restrict religious practice while denying plaintiffs their right to sue until they exhaust the local zoning process. The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the fall. The brief can be read here. The brief was drafted in partnership with the law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP.The case centers on Daniel Grand, an Orthodox Jew in University Heights, Ohio. As an Orthodox Jew, Grand is supposed to pray with a minyan—a gathering of ten men—and cannot drive to synagogue on the Sabbath. As such, he invited nearby Jews to gather at his home Saturday morning for prayer services. The city of University Heights issued a cease-and-desist order, deeming the gathering a “place of religious assembly,” illegal without a city-issued permit. When Grand filed suit arguing a violation of his religious liberty, the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit said the case was not “ripe” because Grand had withdrawn his permit application before the city reached a final decision. Driver Arrested After Leading Police on Wild Chase Near Brick Memorial High School A Brick man was arrested today after allegedly fleeing from a traffic stop near Brick Memorial High School and leading officers on a pursuit. At approximately 7 a.m., a Brick police officer was conducting traffic enforcement on Lanes Mill Road near Brick Memorial High School when he observed a vehicle stopped on the shoulder while dropping off students. The officer approached the vehicle and directed the driver, identified as 38-year-old Corey Goodwin of Brick, to move from the shoulder. During the interaction, the officer observed that Goodwin was not wearing a seatbelt and directed him to pull into the Boland Field parking lot so the motor vehicle stop could be conducted safely. Leon Sr., who is retiring after serving the Lakewood community for more than 34 years. Captain Leon began his service as a volunteer firefighter in 1992, serving until 2015. He also worked as a part-time firefighter for the district from 1997 until 2002, when he was hired full-time. Speaking with TLS, Captain Leon said he was honored to have had the opportunity to serve the residents of Lakewood for so many years. New Jersey American Water Rates Increasing September 15, Though PFAS Credit Will Offset Costs for Eligible Customers New Jersey American Water customers will begin seeing higher water and wastewater rates beginning September 15 following approval by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities. The approved rate increase will generate approximately $68 million in additional annual revenue for the company and will support more than $1.4 billion in continued upgrades to water and wastewater infrastructure across the state. For the average residential water customer using approximately 5,700 gallons per month, the increase will amount to about $4 per month. Residential wastewater customers will also see an average increase of approximately $4 per month.
