Ocean County Open-Space Question: $800,000 Home Would Pay $80 More A Year Ocean County voters will decide on Tuesday, November 3 whether to raise the county’s dedicated open-space tax, which voters created in 1997 and which has not gone up since. County Question No. 1 asks whether the Ocean County Natural Lands Trust Fund should increase its funded rate from 1.2 cents to 2.2 cents per $100 of total county equalized real property valuation. What it costs: According to the calculator on the county’s open-space website, a home assessed at $400,000 contributes $48 a year to the fund now and would pay $40 more under the proposal. A $600,000 home pays $72 now and would pay $60 more; an $800,000 home pays $96 now and would pay $80 more. 1:13 PMOp-Ed: A Message to the Toms River School Board: Taxpayers Will Be Watching | Booky Kaluszyner As Toms River residents head to the polls to elect members of the Board of Education, there is a message for every candidate and every board member, regardless of who wins: Toms River will be watching, and we will be expecting results, not excuses. This is not about pointing fingers at current or past board members. It is about setting clear expectations for the future. Whoever serves on the Board of Education must understand that taxpayers expect transparency, fiscal responsibility, accountability, and a quality education for every child. Going forward, every dollar spent should be justified. Every position should serve a legitimate purpose. Unnecessary administrative positions, duplicate jobs, and wasteful spending must be examined. If there are opportunities to operate more efficiently without compromising education, we expect the board to pursue them. 2:43 PMVIDEO: Privacy Concerns Surrounding License Plate Reader Technology Discussed At Assembly Committee The Assembly Public Safety and Preparedness Committee held an extensive public hearing last week to discuss legislation addressing the use of automated license plate readers (ALPRs), examining concerns about individual privacy and the use of the technology by law enforcement. The committee heard comments from the ACLU, New Jersey Office of the Public Defender, New Jersey Policy Perspective, and New Jersey State Police, among others. Testimony raised concerns that information collected through the technology could be used to track undocumented people or individuals seeking abortion care, highlighting the potential intrusion on personal privacy. Privacy concerns surrounding the readers have been raised in Trenton before. Representatives from the Attorney General’s Office and law enforcement also testified, emphasizing that safeguards are already in place to regulate the use of automated license plate readers and protect against misuse. 6:27 PMNew Jersey Joins FTC And 19 States In Suing Dollar General Over Alleged Bait-And-Switch Pricing New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport today announced that the state has joined the Federal Trade Commission and a bipartisan coalition of 19 other states in suing Dollar General Corporation, accusing the discount retailer of long-running deceptive pricing practices that harmed consumers in the low-income and rural communities it serves. 6:58 PMFIRST REPORT: Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Challenging Jackson Planning Board’s Approval of Yeshiva Campus An Ocean County Superior Court judge has dismissed a lawsuit challenging the Jackson Township Planning Board’s approval of a proposed yeshiva and dormitory campus on Frank Applegate Road, affirming the board’s decision in full, TLS has learned. In a 19-page decision issued October 20 following a prerogative writs trial held in August, Assignment Judge Francis R. Hodgson Jr. dismissed the action brought by Jackson resident Chris Podolsky “with prejudice,” leaving in place Resolution No. 2026-01, the board’s approval of Applegate Owner, LLC’s project, and ordering each side to bear its own costs and fees. The planning board approved the application by a 7-1 vote at its November 17, 2025 hearing. The project calls for a two-story, approximately 50,600-square-foot institutional building containing a private high school, a post-high-school educational institution and dormitory accommodations, along with a dining area, gymnasium space and parking, on roughly 24.5 acres of vacant, wooded land identified as Block 4404, Lots 1 and 3 on Frank Applegate Road. 3:02 PMTLS PSA: Immigration Attorneys Urge Caution Before Air Travel, Including Domestic Flights Mandl Immigration Lawyers is advising people with unresolved immigration issues to speak with an attorney before flying, even on domestic flights within the United States. Some travelers with foreign passports have recently reported being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at U.S. airports. The reports include people who overstayed their visas or have other unresolved immigration issues, and even those who requested a visa extension but have not yet been approved. According to the firm, flying within the United States does not mean a person is free from the risk of immigration enforcement. Those who may be affected include people who have overstayed a visa or do not currently have lawful immigration status; people with prior deportation or removal orders; and people with pending immigration applications or temporary protections, such as asylum applicants or people with Temporary Protected Status (TPS), depending on their individual circumstances. 5:12 PMLetter: A Life-Saving Solution for Westgate – In-Road Warning Lights and Flashing Beacons on Hillside Blvd Dear Mayor Coles, Township Committeemen, and Fellow Lakewood Residents, I am writing this letter with a heavy heart, immense anxiety, and an urgent plea for action. I am writing as a terrified resident and parent who watches our streets every single day and realizes we are running out of time before a preventable catastrophe takes a life in Westgate. Anyone who lives in or drives through Westgate knows what Hillside Boulevard has become. It is a densely populated neighborhood buzzing with thousands of young children, mothers pushing strollers, yeshiva bachurim walking to and from seder, and elders heading to shul. Yet, Hillside Blvd is consistently treated by reckless drivers like an open-throttle bypass. Combined with the low visibility at night, drivers routinely fly down this residential road at 35 to 40+ MPH, oblivious to the fact that around the next bend, an entire family is trying to cross. 7:15 PMAG Davenport Co-Leads Supreme Court Brief Defending Assault Weapons Bans, Calls AR-15s ‘Lethal Battlefield Weapons’ New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport co-led a multistate amicus brief filed in the U.S. Supreme Court today defending the right of states to ban AR-15 platform and similar semiautomatic rifles. The brief was joined by 17 other states and the District of Columbia. It supports Cook County, Illinois, and the State of Connecticut in two consolidated cases, Viramontes v. Cook County and Grant v. Higgins, which the Supreme Court will hear on December 2. An opinion is expected before the term ends in the summer of 2027. “When especially dangerous weapons inflict mass casualties and turn schools, houses of worship, nightclubs, and grocery stores into war zones, states must be able to act to protect the public. That’s why we are leading a multistate coalition urging the U.S. Supreme Court to recognize that states have the power to regulate lethal battlefield weapons like AR-15s,” Davenport said. “Let me be clear: We will do everything in our power to combat all forms of gun violence, including by keeping especially dangerous weapons off our streets.” READ MORE ⤵️ https://thelakewoodscoop.com/news/ag-davenport-co-leads-supreme-court-brief-defending-assault-weapons-bans-calls-ar-15s-lethal-battlefield-weapons/

9:00 PMThis Weekend: Clocks Fall Back As Daylight Saving Time Ends Sunday Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. this Sunday, November 1, when clocks will be turned back one hour to standard time. Although the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Sunshine Protection Act in July to make daylight saving time permanent nationwide, the measure remains stalled in the Senate, so this weekend’s clock change goes ahead under current federal law. As TLS reported Monday, President Trump made a last-ditch effort to “stop the clock” just days before the change takes effect. AAA is reminding drivers that the fall time change brings increased danger on the roads, from drowsy driving to reduced visibility in the earlier darkness. Previous research by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety showed that an estimated 17.6% of all fatal crashes in years 2017–2021 involved a drowsy driver, with an estimated 29,834 people killed in crashes involving drowsy drivers over that five-year period. Drivers are urged to stay alert for pedestrians during the darker evening hours, and those out walking are urged to make themselves visible. 10:00 PMNew Column! Making It Work: Stretching a Kollel Budget Without Feeling Squeezed A kollel budget is a different animal: the income is modest and largely fixed, so the discipline has to live on the spending side. None of this is about deprivation. It is about making sure the money that comes in is doing the jobs you actually care about – and not evaporating into purchases nobody remembers. Most kollel families run on a patchwork: the stipend, a wife’s job or side business, and help from parents that arrives in different shapes. Write down one honest monthly figure for what actually comes in, and one for what actually goes out. Couples who do this once almost always find a gap of a few hundred dollars they could not name – and naming it is what lets you close it. For a family eating every meal at home, food is the largest flexible line. The wins are boring but real: one big weekly shop with a list instead of four drop-ins, store brands for staples, meat and chicken bought on sale and frozen, and a fixed weekly cash envelope for the extras that quietly add up – the nosh, the takeout, the Shabbos treats. Families who switch to a list-and-envelope system commonly report saving 15-20% without eating worse.
