Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the NYC Health Department announced new measures aimed at strengthening the city’s response to Legionnaires’ disease following a deadly Upper East Side outbreak that has resulted in 94 cases and 11 deaths. The plan includes improved tracking and mapping of cooling towers, faster testing methods, quicker enforcement of violations, and a new scientific advisory panel. The measures are expected to begin rolling out later this year and continue through 2028.

GOP gubernatorial candidate and Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman vowed to overhaul New York’s Parole Board if elected governor, blaming Gov. Kathy Hochul’s criminal justice policies after ex-con Jesus Acosta was charged with killing two people during separate NYC robberies. Blakeman said he would seek the resignation of current parole board members and appoint replacements focused on public safety. Hochul’s office pushed back, saying Acosta was not released by the Parole Board but had completed his maximum prison sentence.

A 17-year-old student is wanted by the NYPD after a gun was found inside his backpack at Sheepshead Bay High School on Avenue X Friday afternoon. Police say the firearm was discovered after the student went through a scanner while attending sports practice. The teen fled before officers arrived and remained at large as of Friday evening.
