Mayor Zohran Mamdani has declared September 11 an official citywide “Day of Remembrance and Service” ahead of the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks. Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Monday signed an executive order creating the Mayor’s Office of Worker Power, which City Hall says is the first office of its kind in the nation. The new office will focus on helping New York City workers learn about their rights, connect with worker organizations and have a greater voice in workplace issues. It will also hold public hearings, work with city agencies on labor-related research and policy, and address issues including wage violations, worker misclassification, new technology and workplace safety. Labor organizer and former longshoreman Tony Perlstein has been appointed to lead the office.

Full enforcement of the city’s new official trash bin requirement begins Tuesday, September 8. Properties with 1–9 residential units are required to use official NYC Bins when putting trash out for collection, ending the warning period that has been in effect since June.

There was no trash, recycling or curbside compost collection Monday due to Labor Day. Residents with Monday collection should place their material at the curb Monday evening for pickup beginning Tuesday. The Sanitation Department says some delays are possible following the holiday.

Two men who operated a Brooklyn construction safety training company have been indicted for allegedly selling fake OSHA and site-safety cards for $500 each to workers who never completed the required training. Prosecutors say undercover investigators posed as construction workers during the investigation.

For the first time, several streets in Boro Park will be closed to vehicles on the first night of Rosh Hashanah to accommodate the thousands of pedestrians expected throughout the neighborhood. The closures, coordinated by Community Board 12 with the NYPD, Shomrim and Chaveirim, will include 14th and 15th Avenues between 47th and 51st Streets, as well as 48th, 49th and 50th Streets between 13th and 16th Avenues. The move is aimed at providing additional space and safer passage for residents walking to visit family, Rebbes and Rabbanim throughout Yom Tov night.

City Council leaders are moving to tighten New York City’s press credentialing rules after controversy over official press passes being issued to supporters of Luigi Mangione.
