2:28 PMIt appears Britain will come apart before Israel: Less than a week after British PM Andy Burnham announced sanctions aiming to separate Yehuda and Shomron from Israel, three of the four countries which make up the United Kingdom made their own announcement — we are working to dismantle their 320-year union. • The heads of these governments signing a memorandum demanding the British government prepare for a mass exodus from the U.K. “For the first time ever, there are First Ministers in Scotland, in Wales and in the North of Ireland who are all committed to independence from the United Kingdom,” the memo reads. “For people watching across these islands — for people watching around the world — there could be no clearer sign that Westminster’s time is coming to an end.” • The signers did not provide an explicit goal or path to independence, apparently acknowledging that each nation has “different constitutional positions” and “will determine its own future in its own way and in its own time.” • Withdrawal from the U.K. is relatively unpopular in Wales, with polling last week showing only about 30% would vote to leave. In Scotland, which held an independence referendum in 2014 which had 55% voting to remain, a poll conducted in August found 48% wanting to leave and 45% to stay. A poll in May found that 61% of Northern Irish citizens would vote to stay compared to 28% who favor withdrawal. • President Trump, during a visit last week to Ireland, said it would be “fantastic” for Ireland and Northern Ireland to be reunified, adding, “it’s going to happen eventually.”

10:56 PMNew details on the Oval Office meeting with the rebbes: In an Ami Magazine feature, Yochonon Donn reveals several unreported anecdotes from President Trump’s meeting with the rebbes in the Oval Office last week: • When VP Vance asked about the different colors of the guests’ bekeshes, he got four answers. Yossi Gestetner answered with a joke. KJ administrator Gedalya Szegedin explained that each rabbi wore the traditional garb from the part of Europe he originates. Bobover askan Yoel Rosenfeld used a military metaphor to explain it. “It’s like the Navy and the Marines,” he said. “They have different uniforms, but they serve the same purpose.” And the Satmar rebbe, Rav Zalman Leib, said, “Inside, we’re all the same.” • Trump started the meeting with a favorite subject: his B-2 bombers. “You guys are funny,” he told the rabbanim. “I send B-2 bombers to Iran, I bombed them to smithereens... but I don’t get a thank you. But I pardoned this butcher from Iowa—he had some kind of funny name—and everybody is happy.” “Rubashkin,” someone prompted him. “Yeah, Lubashkin [sic]. Is the guy still alive?” the president responded. The attendees assured him that Reb Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin is doing fine. “That was total anti-Semitism,” he said. “I called the prosecutor and asked, ‘Why’d you give this person 28 years? He had some illegal immigrants, but who doesn’t have? You get a fine, not 28 years.’ The prosecutor said, ‘he deserved much more.’ I told him, ‘You’re an anti-Semite. I’m pardoning him.’” • When the Skverer Rebbe’s son gave Trump a letter from his father and told him that he couldn’t attend due to his age, the president looked at his white beard and asked, “You still have a father who’s alive? You yourself look old.” He then quizzed him. “How old is your father?” Not wanting to divulge his father’s age, Rav Aharon Mendel replied, “He’s old.” “How old?” Trump wanted to know. “Somewhere between 80 and 90,” Rav Aharon Mendel replied. “Okay,” said Trump, who recently turned 80. “That’s old.” • The Ami feature delves into the surprisingly very short history of presidents meeting gedolim. It notes that the meeting this month was a watershed moment, lasting for a total of over three hours; the meeting with Trump in the Oval Office itself went on for a half hour.

10:53 PMThe dream behind Rav Shalom Ber Sorotzkin’s trip to Uman: Rav Shalom Ber Sorotzkin’s unprecedented trip to Uman for Rosh Hashanah in exchange for an $11 million donation to his yeshivah, Ateres Shlomo, continues to make waves. • It now emerges that immediately after Rosh Hashanah, one of the donors, who lives in Brazil, contacted Rav Sorotzkin and told him, “Come to me urgently.” The Rosh Yeshivah, who was at the airport in Istanbul on his way to New York, changed his plans and boarded the first available flight to Brazil. • Upon arriving at the donor’s office, the donor gathered his Jewish employees and shared with them a startling story. He related that on Rosh Hashanah night he had a dream where he saw Rav Sorotzkin standing at the tziyun of Rav Nachman and tearfully reciting Tehillim. Asked why he was weeping, the rosh yeshiva explained that he was far from his yeshivah and that it was difficult to travel so much. • At this point in the dream, Rav Nachman suddenly appeared and told Rav Sorotzkin, “Hakadosh Baruch Hu runs the world.” He then turned to the donor and said, “You should make sure to make him especially happy.” He then woke up. The donor then announced that he was adding an additional $500,000 from his personal funds to the sum, although it was more than he could afford to make Rav Sorotzkin happy.

He said he’s already “made very clear about my views, my thoughts, my assessments” on the matter but he was focused on ensuring the city is prepared to host representatives from across the world, keep New Yorkers safe, and keep traffic flowing. • It’s a far cry from his typically strident anti-Israel rhetoric and baseless threats to arrest Netanyahu. And he has appeared to call on New Yorkers to protest, something that would be unheard of for a mayor who in in charge of quelling protests. He denied today making that call, saying “I’ve never encouraged them to protest, but I always told them they have the right to do so, and we respect that right, and this city is proud of the first amendment.”
